Sorry, I wished this was from The Onion, but it's notWisconsin state Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) has introduced a bill demonizing single parents by classifying them as child abusers.
Senate Bill 507 specifically requires "the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect."
A third of Wisconsin parents are single parents, but this law affects even more than that. The way the law refers to "nonmarital parenthood" also makes this applicable to non-married couples, including same-sex couples. S.B. 507 reads:

(35,392 posts)In fact, that's one way to make your abused wife lose her kid and you win ...
(already abusive) husband decides to walk away from the marriage ... divorces the wife. Remarries quickly, gets the kids. Wife left with NOTHING.
And that's not "abuse"???????

(12,939 posts)how will this handle situations like, a minor female has an out-of-wedlock child? Will a law like this effect her, her parents, or, horrors, cause her to seek an abortion?
Or, say a spouse dies leaving behind the other spouse and the children?
What happens in that case?
ARE there enough courts and social workers to handle this?

(2,577 posts)I'm assuming Sen. Grothman is a strong proponent of comprehensive sex education???
Huh. We can't fund education, won't support infrastructure, but state legislatures have time for this complete and total asshattery?
So, say your spouse DIES in service to the country ... is THAT child abuse???

(13,029 posts)But the people here getting their shorts in a knot over this law should actually READ it. Nowhere does it say that if you are a single parent that you are by default a child abuser or can be criminally charged with child abuse. Nothing even close to that. The headline of this OP is seriously misleading about what the law says, though to be fair, the article linked to has the same misleading headline.

(12,939 posts)but it is time, long overdue, to make sure there is separation of church and state in our country. These ppl are beyond nuts. They are psychotic, and want to codify their religious beliefs (minus the helping-the-poor part that that bearded dude Jesus always harped on, the hippie ) into law in order to start stoning people, placing them in jail for years w/o charges being brought.
