The sportswriter who came under fire over the weekend for tweeting a racist comment about the Indianapolis 500 has been let go. Terry Frei is no longer an employee of The Denver Post, said a statement from the newspaper. We apologize for the disrespectful and unacceptable tweet that was sent by one of our reporters. Frei had tweeted that he was very uncomfortable with a Japanese driver, Takuma Sato, winning the Indianapolis 500 over Memorial Day weekend. Afterward, he issued an apology, writing: I am sorry, I made a mistake, and I understand.

Now we just wait for the screaming trumpskies to (a) tweet heartily against the Post, and (b) call for a Post boycott. Trending topic by sundown...I'll be waiting...

(17,865 posts)If he is a sports reporter, I would think he would like to see sports (especially those sports he covers) expand. Having a foreign national from a nation without a strong tradition in open car win a premiere race should be a great thing for the sport. I personally don't care for auto racing, but why would a Japanese man winning more than an Italian for example be a bad thing.
The nice thing about sport like auto racing is that it is a meritrocracy. So long as there is no cheating. then the best driver and team that day deserve to win.
