Posting comments on mainstream liberal websites

or, for that matter, local news websites.

I periodically comment on the usual mainstream, liberal websites - nyt (liberal-ish, depending), salon, slate, motherjones (more than liberal), and the like. I even have a bunch of likes and fans on the ones that count such things.

Lately, however, I've begun to wonder why I waste my time. Periodically an intelligent (read liberal's) response will add some information or perspective to the debate, but as often as not it will pretty much reflect the generalized liberal viewpoint. And the trolls - and I really do wonder why they spend their time on liberal sites - are just so far out of touch with reality that their responses are quite sad and pitiful, when they don't make my blood boil. They are not going to have an "aha" moment, and they are not going to convert a liberal to their way of thinking.

I almost wonder whether these and other sites will begin to stop allowing comments. They really are pointless. Sure, it's a hoot to see 13,000 comments lambasting Joe Walsh, but isn't really like spitting into the wind (or, in Jim Croce mode, tugging on Superman's cape).

My comment about local websites - at least my local news site: A person in my small town told me about a comment she had made on our local newspaper site. I went to the site to find the entry, but couldn't - very badly organized site. In the process, though, I found comments on various news stories, and I have to say, I was shocked at the RW hate directed at the poor and, of course, at liberals. I was shocked at the attitudes in this small community (New England, town of 25,000, county of 70,000). Not mere differences of opinion or alternative policies, but foaming at the mouth, freeper on steroids hate.

I thought about commenting and then got to thinking about the whole commenting thing and then wrote this post.

If you stop posting, your influence will stop also.

But if you really think you're wasting your time, well then.....

I'd hate to see the freepers go unchallenged.

Believe it or not even in an ocean of teabags there are brilliant people out there who have great ideas and who know their shit. If you or any other intelligent person abandons their commenting we'll just be left with teabags.
