Amid reports that MSNBC is threatening to cancel popular liberal host's program, his fans are taking to the streets

Fans of MSNBC host Lawrence ODonnell are planning a march against the network at its New York headquarters later this week in protest of the channel for not having renewed his contract.
In an interview with Salon, Annie Salas, the protests organizer, cited the recent Womens March the day after President Donald Trump was inaugurated as her inspiration for taking action.
I havent done anything like this before, she said. But after having gone to the Womens March and the climate change march, I felt like it was time to address something here in New York.
The event is scheduled to take place Thursday, May 25 outside of the offices that NBC and MSNBC share at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan. Salas and her allies are using the hashtag #MarchforLawrence to spread the word.

(94,728 posts)They're going to respond to reduced viewership and ad revenue. The protest needs to be built around financial pain.

(58,785 posts)another person (soggy Wonderbread-posturing-as-a-great-journalist Brian Williams?!) in that slot would hold Rachel's viewership. Could this be true?
To me, Williams is a pumped-up nothing and always has been, building a phony personal reputation on increasingly betraying the purpose of journalism (recognized in our constitution) during the era that TV news sank into the gutter. O'Donnell offers a genuinely different and deeper viewpoint. I record and watch O'Donnell. If Williams gets that slot, my TIVO recordings stop with Rachel.
And if others feel that way, MSNBC should know that. Williams would require at least most of a season of resurrecting the real, dead 60 Minutes to draw me. That won't happen.

(613 posts)I tend to think a Comcast protest would be more effective. MSNBC already has a liberal rep.
If Comcast started feeling a blowback that would be a big effect that could cause them to drop Lack and recommit to truth honesty and progressive values at MSNBC.

(253 posts)I don't live in New York so I won't be there, but I have a request/suggestion: that people should carry signs in this march that say, in effect, that if Lawrence is gone so are we. People refusing to watch MSNBC anymore if LO'D is dismissed will not be hurting Rachel or Joy Ann. Neither of them will have any trouble getting jobs on prestigious media platforms if they have to move on. The managements of MSNBC, NBC Universal, and Comcast need to know that they and their companies have price to pay should they take this step.

(81,466 posts)I don't live there either, otherwise I'd be there for that march, too.
Management MUST be shown that there will be consequences for its actions. I already tune away when Greta's on. I'm starting to do likewise when Nicolle Wallace is on. Scarborough in the mornings? Meh - I don't even bother. Besides, too early for me here in the Pacific time zone. If that repulsively smug Hugh Hewitt is installed on the weekends, I'll be walking my dog more extensively and then turning to Food Network.

(99 posts)First they get rid of contributor Michael Eric Dyson. They won't give Joy Reed a prime time spot, and she is one of the best journalist they have. We rarely see/hear from Steve Kornacki anymore. MSNBC gives the Russian-gymnast-look-alike, Greta Van Susteren (who also has a horrible on air voice) a slot. NBC dumps Tamara Hall to make room for Fox's femme fatale Megyn Kelly.
I read where they wanted to get rid of Lawrence because he comes down "too hard on Trump". I think the kindest thing Lawrence has said about the Clown in Charge is that he's ignorant.
If they dump Lawrence for that spineless, lying Brian Williams I'm done. They've been slowing moving to the right for months. If I wanted a Fake Fox News, I'd watch Fox News!

(10,303 posts)Psst ... if he really was about "hard news" there's a lot of stuff he could do before removing the #2 show on the channel.... like all those weekend "Lock Up" shows.

(34,137 posts)The same way Roger Ailes used Fox News to push his similar ideology.
Lack cares less about about ratings and revenues than he does about shoving his ideas down viewers throats.
If I had the ready cash I would buy stock in Comcast and attend stockholder meetings to protest how Lack is mismanaging MSNBC and threatening to tank the ratings now that the network is finally getting on top so it can be come a real money maker.
Remember, Fox News is being investigated for their misuse of corporate funds to pay off the victims of sexual abuse at the network. The feds don't like it when the stockholders get pissed off at malfeasance by the corporate leadership.

(32,748 posts)They found him another show on MSNBC where he's been hiding out for 3 years or so. If Williams wants a better time-slot why doesn't he trade with Greta?
It doesn't make sense that they would fire the best guy they have - Lawrence O'Donnell - and make a political thing out of it. They only fire the guys who don't have the ratings, and Lawrence DOES have them.
Or else you fire guys that screw up like Williams did.

(34,137 posts)Lawrence O'Donnell tells the truth - that is the difference and why Lack wants to get O'Donnell out while he was willing to give Brian Williams his own show.
Like I said, Andy Lack was to push his ideology. He does not care if the channel loses money or if the ratings drop through the floor.

(9,314 posts)Report: Comcast Is Ending Lawrence ODonnells MSNBC Show Because He Was Too Critical Of Trump
By Jason Easley on Tue, May 16th, 2017 at 10:12 pm
The Last Word is pulling in record ratings, but Lawrence O'Donnell's show will end when his contract expires because Trump put pressure on NBC to fire the host because he was too critical of the President.

(34,137 posts)I'm not sure when that would be - when I tried to research it before, all I could find was that it was renewed in 2011 and those articles did not say how long it was renewed for.

(9,314 posts)Rachel has a very different delivery, always smiling, sometimes laughing and not as pointed (in my opinion, although I have not watched her lately) as O'Donnell, who has always skewered him.

(89,264 posts)and she is very important in that since she reports many things that others do not.
but Odonnell just comes out an calls him a liar , deviant , ignorant etc. he doesn't hold back .
he also calls out the rest of the media and their shitty ass reporting. like how they praise him for giving a speech and "today he became a president" type bs.
Lawrence also was the one who called the swift boat assholes liars to their face. you know how the media has 2 sides even though the facts are only with one side and try to do the fair and balanced you decide, both sides equal shit ? he just called them liars to their face.

(7,530 posts)Rachel isn't expressing her opinion so often except as backed up by her research and journalism, where O'Donnell is commenting on the news in a manner that pisses off the right (and likely MSNBC).
It's the difference between "Trump sucks!" and "Trump did this list of things that suck..."

(89,264 posts)rachel lays out the facts about what is going on and odonnell gives it the reaction it deserves instead of all the bs you hear in the rest of the media which feels the need to be fair or even pro trump.

(297,655 posts)ashamed for even thinking about it.
Me.
(35,454 posts)Andy Lack has always been Bromantic towards Williams and that is why he's willing to throw an entire network overboard to rehab BW's career. IMHO
Secondly....the president of MSNBC is bugged because LD calls 45 a liar, it being the truth notwithstanding
3. 45 has been begging MSNBC to fire LD for years

(3,194 posts)Turn off ALL the so-called news channels, if this is how they want to act.
Those of you still wanting to remain loyal to certain hosts on MSNBC, just don't get it. Unfortunately, you have to speak with your viewership. If you continue watching Rachel, it helps MSNBC's ratings.
If you're going to boycott, then boycott. But make it the entire network, rather than just saying you won't watch Brian Williams, because that's not enough.

(1,180 posts)We MUST keep watching Rachel to keep her on the air. One progressive voice on the air is a 1000 times better than none. Her show is now the most watched program on cable TV, why would you want to silence her?
I agree that MSNBC is heading towards the right in an alarmingly rapid rate, and that's unacceptable. But boycotting the best program on cable is defeatist and would not accomplish anything.
