In the past week, comparisons between President Donald Trump's Russiagate scandal and the Watergate scandal of the 1970s have accelerated, as the White House has made a series shocking decisions that eerily parallel Richard Nixon's attempts to save himself from the investigation that would ultimately force him to resign.
In particular, Trump's abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey, the man in charge of investigating him, is being widely compared to the infamous Saturday Night Massacre, in which Nixon fired the independent special prosecutor who was investigating him, resulting in the immediate resignation of both the attorney general and deputy attorney general. The similarity was so striking, even the Nixon Presidential Library was quick to distance itself from Trump.

On Friday, President Trump invited further comparison by tweeting the following ominous message to Comey.

This not-so-veiled threat immediately spawned another round of shocked reactions. But one commentator who managed to keep his cool was former Nixon lawyer John W. Dean.

Ousted FBI Director James Comey is not worried about any tapes of conversations between him and President Donald Trump, an unnamed source familiar with the matter told CNN on Friday.

Severus Snape was a asshole, too. But he was DUMBLEDORES asshole, and I think when all the equations are scored, that will count for a lot.
Obama left a lot of good pieces on the board for other people to finish his game with. I suspect Director Comey is one of those players.

(38,427 posts)I remember listening to John Dean at the Watergate Hearings. I wondered, is there any way to verify if he is telling the truth?..I guess there was, and he had no problem with being taped, because he was telling the truth.
Mr. Nixon was not telling the truth. As has been proved.
Now, Mr Trump has a long history of lying. Here and there and everywhere. Dean's point is correct. Let's hear any tapes. But, as it has been stated, it is now very easy to alter tapes, and Trump would surly do so.
It will end up in court. Comey vs Trump. Or in the senate. or wherever.....
Question: who has a history of lying and who has a history of truth telling??? We will see. What a show..more popcorn please.

(30,741 posts)Do you remember how long his testimony was? I can't find anything on the length, but it seems to me he was up there talking for more than one session. I found a picture of him, with his wife sitting behind him.
Until the tapes were uncovered, I did not know if I believed him. I thought his wife was being used as a distraction. I thought his carefully coached testimony could have been self-serving. Damned if the tapes didn't prove he was a truthful man after all.
With Watergate, it seemed like there were new revelations daily. This is much, much worse.

(34,390 posts)integrity in the entire West Wing. I can remember his wife, Mo, becoming a star as she sat behind him looking sad and solemn while he testified. I remember him ripping W a few new ones over Iraq. He appears to be one of the few Republicans left with any ense of decency at all. If he's even still a Republican at this point.

(899 posts)I watched all that was going on with Watergate in real time and was so thankful for John Dean. Unfortunately, I don't think there are ANY repukes left with a shred of honor, decency, shame or morals. SAD! Watergate/Nixon pales in comparison to what these traitors have done to this country ~ they should all be hung in the Rose Garden for the world to see that we are still a nation of law and decency.

(6,446 posts)if the tapes were recorded digitally and altered digitally, chances are they could be blended seamlessly... assuming that person knew what they were doing.

(30,741 posts)trump verbiage that will be unintelligible. There was enough of that on the Nixon tapes, but not so much as to destroy the meaning of the conversations. Much of the time, people cannot figure out what trump is talking about.
