George W. Bush helps renovate health center on Africa trip

DALLAS (AP) — Former President George W. Bush has been helping to renovate a women’s cancer screening center in Zambia during a weeklong trip to Africa.

Bush, clad in a T-shirt and jeans, painted and hauled lumber at the Ngungu Health Center in Kabwe, about 90 miles north of the Zambian capital, Lusaka. The center will start screening and treating women Tuesday for cervical cancer and pre-cancer.

The former president and his wife, Laura, are in Africa to promote a partnership between the George W. Bush Institute, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, UNAIDS and Susan G. Komen for the Cure that aims to fight cervical and breast cancer in sub-Saharan Africa.

The George W. Bush Presidential Center says the Bushes arrived in Africa over the weekend.

He probably hauled 1 pc of wood for the photo op. Everything else was done for money in some way. He probably plans to get US subsidy money for his aids foundation or mother fucking somehing like that.

This fucker don't do charity WORK of any kind.

Cause I do not believe that GW has it in him to do something out of kindness, love or goodness. There must be something in it for him. This is the same preztledent who helped block condoms from getting to Africa isn't he? In the name of Christianity he chose to help make aids worse (and I believe I read that aids cases did rise when they took away US aid that paid for condoms)

So Bono can praise him for what he sees on the surface, but my money is on GW's profit line.

same crowd.

U2 frontman Bono has a lot on his mind.

He’s so goshdarn busy – what with trying to save the world and singing formulaic songs in iPod adverts – that he occasionally puts his hat down and forgets to take it with him when he leaves.

"But wait," we hear you cry, "how will Bono keep his rakish flamboyant air without his hat? What will he do? What, for Christ’s sake? WHAT???"

Not to worry. Because (according to an American newspaper) Bono – who wants you to cut back on the odd luxury and give all your money to the poor, remember – is more than prepared to spend $1,700 on flying his favourite bit of headgear from London to Italy.

First class, no less.

Barring evidence to the contrary I am willing to consider this a good one. Bono is a good enough character witness on this issue to force me to keep an open mind. One thing George W. Bush was not and is not (compared to many Republican and Tea Party voters) is personally racist. His record was also relatively good on humanitarian issues in Africa.

Nowadays Republicans are singing the mantra that giving anyone assistance on virtually anything only makes folks dependent and lazy. W at least never fully signed on to that ideology.

You don't think that the patriot act, Iraq war, etc. smelled of racism? (i.e. anti-Arabs, muslims, etc.)

I didn't say that his policies did not contribute to racist outcomes. That is one (not the only) of the reasons why the term institutional racism was developed. George W. Bush does not believe that whites are superior to blacks etc., though he may well believe that his peers are superior to his non peers - and generally in his socio economic bracket his peers are white. His respect for and warmth toward african americans and latinos in his own personal inner circle (and family) is clear and not feigned. He actually has blacks and latinos in his personal inner circle, unlike many Republicans who seem to only keep a few around as window dressing.ia edit P.S

Added via edit P.S.

Unlike most Republicans since him who constantly pander toward the Tea Party, W actually expressed support for and defended the American Islamic Community after 9/11. Yes I am only talking about words spoken, but sometimes it is important what words an American President is willing to say. Most of the Republicans who ran against Romney for the G.O.P. nomination this year would not have done the same, and I'm not sure Romney would have either.

Well, it looks like a decent thing to do.

I worry about the connection with Susan G Komen, though, after
all the Planned Parenthood flap.

Also, I'm wondering if there are conditions involved in renovating
this center, such as banning family planning and abortion.
