What is the significance of congress getting involved? Would that just be more resources?

(12,677 posts)You don't blindside Congress if you're working on impeachable offenses. Without Congress involved, there's no chance for that Hollywood moment where the patriotic FBI agent stands in front of the House of Representatives with a binder and a PowerPoint presentation to make a case for them to "Act Now, before Putin takes Over and America as we know it is gone forever!".
No FBI team is going to march into the White House with warrants and put the highest ranking members of the administration in handcuffs because of evidence they found.
CIA and FBI can gather intelligence and make an analysis, but it takes Congress to act on it at the Presidential level.

(2,787 posts)THE FBI can press charges against a sitting President, but does not have the authority to remove him without congress. Theoretically I would guess the FBI could press charges now if they have the evidence, but could not make an arrested until after he has completed his term unless congress votes to impeach.
