Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have a crazy idea. NOT SOMEONE WHO ALREADY RAN 2020
We need NEW ideas. NEW blood.
NOT people who have run before.
No offense to Gore, Clinton, Biden or Sanders
but we. need. to. be. FRESH.
Look deeper. Let's stop digging down into the same well expecting
the same people we've seen before to emerge to make things better.
I can respect my fellow DUers who believe in the Bern, but I don't believe in him and I can't see where I ever would.
I would like a TRUE and PROUD (consistently proud, not just when it suits) DEMOCRAT
to run and win.
As for Hillary- I voted for her in the primary and in the national. She was my choice.
BUT.
The entire time I knew that running a Clinton only made the Rethug job easier for them.
The never ending smear campaign against the Clintons- and interestingly HER in particular (which I honestly think is 98.999% based on her gender and the fact that she's too damn smart for most men) made it easier for the Trump and his Russian peeps to pull the wool over his supporters eyes.
IMHO it made it easier to steal this thing. Because more and more I believe that she won- but his supporters are so deeply entrenched in the bullshit that they'll never, ever believe it. Even if they have it on tape.
For anyone who wants to argue that Bernie could've taken Trump...
UGH.
Guess what? The same would've happened with him, just from a different playbook.
You need to take a deep breath and look at who- and WHAT- the republican party really is.
Because a party full of confederate flag waving idiots who (a) hate women (b) hate blacks (c) hate Mexicans (d) hate gays (e) hate Hollywood (f) hate educated people and (g) hate Muslims was NEVER going to allow the election of a "socialist" jewish man from Vermont.
The core problem here- the often ignored issue- is that the Republican machine plays to hatred and the stupid.
We can't fight that with the same old, same old.

(111,261 posts)and there are a lot of good liberals and progressives out there to pass the torch to who weren't born during the Boomer years of 1946-1964. I'm an old Boomer, myself, and realize the world needs to move on.
We especially can't count on broadcast media to do anything but suppress our message and refuse to inform people while pushing another GOP moron the plutocracy think they can control.
The next fight is going to have to be a social media fight and grassroots, local fight. Corporate broadcast media have made themselves irrelevant.

(8,197 posts)It definitely showed that the most of the press is controlled by money/ratings. And that doesn't make for good reporting.

(13,920 posts)None of the candidates we've already run is going to pass muster in the the next GE. At this point It really doesnt matter if Bernie could have won. Nor if Hillary could have won. Nor if Biden could have won.
"Could have" is NOT the same thing as "Can"
We need to bring someone new.
There's no chance we get someone new sooner than two years. Trump could start shooting folk in the street, and the Rep Majority wouldn't impeach. And even if he annoys them enough to impeach, and even if Pence decided to take early retirement.. We'd end up with Ryan.
So we have 2 years till the next midterm. That's the time period we have to stock our bench's with solid, new candidates who can be elected to office and get some name recognition in time for the next election.

I fear that we do need a Christian white male...because there are too many troglodytes that won't accept anything else. But perhaps we can stretch the category in the VP slot.

(2,108 posts)New blood also needs political know how, established working relationships, a depth of wise advisers to navigate the rocky shoals of modern American politics and governing.
New blood is a great rallying cry but, IMO the presidency is not the place for someone to cut their political teeth. There's too much at stake.
We need someone experienced in battling the opposition.
Not New! New! New!
Not now. The cleanup after this disaterous administration will be epic.

(16,860 posts)Martin O'Malley....hope he runs again in the primary. He's been a steady voice for the Dems and he's making a name for himself in the Trump opposition.
This statement will likely get a blowback but here goes. You're absolutely correct about Sec Clinton. I voted for her, I worked to get out the vote for her, but your point is 100% correct and something I predicted in the primary. Due to the overwhelming tsunami of right wing smears she has endured for damn near thirty years, many voters viewed her in such a negative light that they would crawl to the voting booth to vote against her. It's not fair to her, it's not right, but it's the reality for many voters who have been inundated with RW shit since she was First Lady. Likewise, there's no way in hell that Bernie could have won in the general. The smears of "Jewish socialist" would have been the mildest attack.
As a party, we need to be promoting and highlighting our young, upcoming leaders. In no way do I mean that in an ageist way, but it's time to shift our attentions to the new blood in the party that are working hard to push back at Trump and his minions.

When people stop talking about what really happened, Russia, KGOP, Comey, Gowdy, McConnell et al, Crosscheck, Gerrymandering, GASLIGHTING, then you just lend legitimacy to asshole's presidency.
Just. Stop.

(26,621 posts)He was new, he was a fresh face with no history, real or imagined. He had worked directly with people, directly with outreach, and hard as they tried, they couldn't find any dirt. That's exactly what we needed in 2016 and it's what we need now, but, now we know, a little dirt is ok too.
