General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have a crazy idea. Joe Biden in 2020.
It worked in California. Californians replaced a celebrity executive with a proven veteran and the results have been positive. Californians wanted steady progressive and pragmatic leadership after the Schwarzenegger fiasco and Jerry Brown provided it.
After four years of Trump a steady pragmatist and progressive like Ole Joe Biden who knows how things work will look pretty good.
I know it's early to discuss 2020 but the parallels dawned on me.

(99,710 posts)I have to see how he holds up over the next four years. He will be 78.
On the other hand Konrad Adenauer governed post WW ll Germany at 87.

(35,340 posts)younger. That's the problem we thought it was Hillary's turn and we have nobody on the bench other than
a handful of elderly people. I am 69 myself and I know I can't function either mentally or physically anyway
near what I could ten years ago I think there is a retirement age for a reason.

(1,097 posts)With a VP as good to him as he was to BHO -- it would be a winning team. He's not someone you'd have to guess where his heart is -- he'll tell you, make no mistake about it. He could keep the seat warm while some of the 2018 inductees get their political legs and footing.

(53,032 posts)Isn't there anyone whose age will be below the average life expectancy that people like?
I favored Biden in 2008. That was 12 years before 2020.

(10,500 posts)So I have no problem with Biden or Sanders running.
The two candidates who I like right now are Elizabeth Warren and Jay Inslee. Warren will be 71 in 2020. Inslee will be 69.

(17,006 posts)That is a crazy idea. He is, simply, too old. He's great but, we can do better.

(5,275 posts)78 is just too old and he would be 82 after 4 years.
We have more than a few younger and more energetic potential candidates.
trueblue2007
(17,219 posts)and DemocratSinceBirth you are BRILIANT ALSO. Joe isn't a crazy idea.

(99,710 posts)Jerry Brown is a vibrant 79 but he's retiring.

(44,127 posts)-We tested some early 2020 match ups for President and Trump has deficits of 14 points against Joe Biden (54/40), 9 points against Bernie Sanders (50/41), and 4 points against Elizabeth Warren (46/42). Trump does at least manage ties with Al Franken at 43% and Cory Booker at 42%, although previous polling we've done has found neither of them is universally well known nationally.

(4,608 posts)And I say this as a senior citizen. Plus, if Trump gets us into a war with N. Korea, or Iran, or fill-in-the-blank I could easily see him suspending elections.

(25,858 posts)That idea was bruited around quite seriously in 2003/04. Didn't happen then. Has never happened. Won't happen.
There will be an election in 2020.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,858 posts)Yes, he's too old. Quite frankly, he was too old last year. So was Hillary, and so was Bernie. Not to mention the man who currently resides in the White House.
If we keep on electing older and older people to the job, pretty soon we'll run out of octogenarians.
No one currently over the age of 50 ought to be seriously considered for 2020. That does leave out a lot of otherwise appealing candidates, like Sherrod Brown, Al Franken, Elizabeth Warren.
We absolutely need to be looking toward the future, not the past. Surely some smart Millennial (born after 1980) is out there waiting to step up.

(11,175 posts)Yes, Obama, Bill Clinton, and JFK were in their 40s when inaugurated, but Carter and LBJ were in their 50s, and Truman was 64 when elected in 1948. (Among recent Republicans, Shrub was 54; his father and Reagan were both in their 60s.)
Another issue is that the Democrats' current national leadership pool does happen to skew older than in past years. For example, Al Franken is considered a fresh face, but he'll turn 69 during the 2020 campaign. Kirsten Gillibrand has attracted a few mentions for 2020, but even she (born 1966) would be too old by your criterion.
There's some enthusiasm on the left for Tulsi Gabbard, who'll be 39 by next Inauguration Day. Other than her, I don't recall anyone else under 50 even getting much mention. Another JFK, Clinton, or Obama in his or her 40s may emerge as a serious contender, but I wouldn't count on it.

(2,533 posts)No Joe, no Hillary, no Bernie. We MUST have someone younger. Like it or not most people do take age as a consideration when voting. We have to have a candidate that can win, so we need a candidate that doesn't start out with health /age factors being held against them

Although I'd also really like to see some leaders from the West Coast take the reins. I feel like the beltway forgets we exist and gives our issues short shrift.

(574 posts)Our mission if we choose to accept it:
Take Obama's smarts and integrity, add the fire in the belly of Bernie Sanders, then top it off with the political acumen and courage of Hillary Clinton. Dunno who that is, but s/he's out there. Actually, I suspect there are several Democrats who would fit the bill, but we've grown too lazy to look outside the usual boxes.

(62,444 posts)I am a native Delawarean. I have known Joe Biden for most of my life. Joe Biden was one of my law professors. I got the highest grade in his class. Joe has fought a lot of good fights, and I have supported him in every presidential primary since Dukakis.
Joe has had a great political career. It is over.

We need a bring up a new generation of strong Democratic Party leadership for the future.
Let Joe ride off into the sunset and enjoy his life.

(80,708 posts)...someone whose name we aren't even familiar with yet, like "Obama" circa 2003...
etc..
Point is, for the love of God, lets expand our bench, please. In terms of age, in terms of geography, etc.
And no more "marquee" candidates sucking all the air out of the room and turning what should be a vigorous primary contest full of debates about direction of the party, into a "it's your turn, now" coronation.
