These statistics take on new weight given that the president of the United States is an accused sexual predator.
According to the survey, more than 1 in 6 teenage girls (or 17 percent) reported that they had experienced harassment since the 2016 presidential election.
Many advocates worried that there would be an uptick in violence against women when President Donald Trump took office. Directly after the election, many incidences of sexism and harassment happened, along with an increase in hate crimes.
President Trump has been accused of sexually assaulting more than a dozen women, and has publicly defended other men who have been accused of sexual harassment and assault, like Roger Ailes and the recently-ousted Bill OReilly.
My concern is based on not just what [President Trumps] behavior has been, because he is an individual, but what he can do to influence other mens behaviors and other womens perceptions of their value, Rita Smith, the former executive director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, told The Huffington Post in November. Even just the election itself had an impact on how men treated and talked about women.

How sick is this, the country elected a sexual predator to the highest office. A man accused of assaulting more than a dozen women, caught on tape no less, bragging about it. He publically has defended both Ailes and O'Reilly. He defends their assaults and has enabled men and boys to believe they can take what they want when the want it. The violence against women has escalated and will continue to do so under this pathetic excuse for a man. Women are no longer safe at school, walking the dog, jogging and they are no longer safe in their very own homes.

(329 posts)I worry that this is only going to accelerate violence against women....especially as women get older. I walk everyday and I pick up trash along the roads and I have noticed an uptick in the nasty yells and screeches from men in pickups as they rush....and accelerate past me.
If you are an older woman, as I am, I really notice the nasty comments.

Yes I am an older woman as well, none of us are exempt to the escalating violence.
It's going to take a lot to undo the mess this man has created...

(27,985 posts)and I am a rare bird because until the Women's March, I had never been sexually assaulted. At the protest, one side of my sign said, "Where are your taxes?", and the other side said, "This pussy bites back". A young guy started verbally harassing me and when I turned to face him, he grabbed my breast. I kneed him so hard, my knee hurt for three days. I left him on the ground, wordlessly screaming.
