I was hoping he realized he had to put his affairs in order before indictment. That may well be the case anyway, just on a different time table.

(32,645 posts)It's only been forbidden relatively recently. So I find it hard to believe they'd shame one of their members for an affair. Especially a highly celebrated man like Chaffetz.
Well even if they do shame him, he's already sold his soul to the devil. The Russian devil that is.

(10,500 posts)I am not sure how it will affect him if he turns out to be a Russian agent.
Right now I am sure that all Republicans are grateful to him for conspiring with James Comey to rig the 2016 election. And I don't just mean over the final days of the race, although that was the most egregious. Chaffetz and Comey were abusing their power to influence the election all the way back in 2015.

(58,785 posts)a duty not only to each other but to God. Marriage and procreation are both in service to God. The children born within marriage are not the parents' but God's, given to the parents by God to nurture and raise as his own to serve him.
Mormons are very interesting politically too, FakeNoose. There were a bunch in our California neighborhood, and at that time our children's friends were being taught the second coming of Jesus would occur within their lifetimes. They believe God created their church specifically to prepare the earth for the establishment of God's kingdom, with his capital to be on a piece of land purchased long ago by them near Independence, Missouri. They've pretty much finished the preparation stage, have been stockpiling a great deal of wealth, and have been continually positioning a number of people, like poor Romney, for the day when God calls one of them to lead God's armies from the WH.
Chaffetz might have been one of them. He even rose politically sufficiently to be pointed to in the media as a possible future president, but...no.

(269,054 posts)I believe that his sudden change of support after the Billy-boy/Pussygrabbing video and when he said he couldn't look his daughter in the eye and support someone like Trump, then suddenly was a big Trump Humper and even kept blocking any attempts of oversight of Trump in the capacity -was that they had something on him....some "Kompromat"...and then he became an obedient comrade....
I have predicted in other threads of his demise...and yes, I picked him for being blackmailed and then colluding.
And today when the announcement came that he would not be running for reelection and then there was a bunch of discussion amongst pundits that he will be running for Utah Governor, I just shook my head and laughed. My first reaction is that its linked to the Russian - Trump investigation and the law zooming in on him...
Then when I saw an interview with him and literally saying something along the lines of the fact that he wants to spend more time and focus at home, now that his wife and him are becoming "empty nesters". And that is when I knew and started laughing and wondered how long before we hear about an affair or an indictment..
It didn't even take a day....

(8,964 posts)First, Chaffetz said he wouldn't be able to justify to his daughter voting for a pussy-grabber like Trump.
Then, he turned around and announced he was voting for the creep anyway.
And now this???
Right now I'm fantasizing a bit that HRC returns to politics, runs for and wins a House seat from NY, with the Dems regaining majority status, and Hillary landing Jason's former committee chairmanship, just in time for him to be hauled back to the Hill to be summarily grilled and eventually indicted for high crimes and treason.

(7,432 posts)in this political climate Chaffetz might have sniffed a little too close up a Russian's butt. A rapid retirement can mean either, or both scenarios. And further, if it's sex, let's remember that Jason's made a lot of enemies during these few years. Had he kept his mind on the parameters of his JOB DESCRIPTION, there might not be any interest in uncovering a sexual scandal. But Chaffetz was never his own man. He clamored for some integrity when he displayed outrage at Trumpy's sex talk with one of those charming Bushes, and got all protective of his teen daughter. But Jason suffered from short term memory loss just a few short weeks after his brave declaration. He caved, threw his own daughter under the bus, and stuck his nose up Trumpy's pants.

(42,714 posts)Could he have had an affair? Certainly can't rule it out, but I'm curious how Russians would have information about it that no one else does.
Campaign finance issue -- possible, moreso than an affair that only the Russians know about. But proving that stuff is hard and I doubt he'd step down because of it -- it won't necessarily stop the investigation.
Setting up Benghazi? How is that even possible? Does anyone think he was communicating with those who attacked the embassy? As far as cutting security, that's a known fact and its not exactly something you can pin on Chaffetz alone.
Personally, I think he's leaving because he's in a no-win situation if he stays. Either he continues to stonewall on investigations of Trump controversies, of which there are and will be many, thereby making him a target if/when Trump goes down. Or he actively runs those investigations and becomes a target for Trump and his crazed followers. Stepping down leaves him with relatively (as measured by the current low bar) unscathed and able to run for governor down the line.
