Paul Manafort was the Campaign Chair at the time of the Convention.
There was a lot of controversy around removing a plank that was favorable to the Ukraine. There are still a lot of questions about this being removed from the platform. And why?
Also, it has been reported that Carter Page met the Russian ambassador while the Convention was taking place. How many other campaign officials met with the Russian ambassador in Cleveland?
What was it all about?

(1,907 posts)A side note what wasn't really talked about was some of the people who were on the platform committee said there were a lot of lobbyists/lawyers there pressuring the platform committee members for Ukraine change to the platform. Who were they? Who had them come in? Who paid for them? Follow the money.
Edit to add: Was there more they were pushing for that did not make it on the platform?

(111,102 posts)and his supporters at the time. I think it was about the sanctions and the big Exxon-Rosfelt oil deal between Exxon and Russia. This would help to explain his refusal to criticize Putin at the time. He was due a percentage of the cut and he was doing his best to appease Putin. It was mostly about money for Trump.

...with Exxon and the Russian oil company and Vladimir Putin. They were all looking to make a lot of money from the deal.
Also, it is my opinion that, over time, Trump made promises in his negotiations that convinced the Russians to help him in his election against Hillary Clinton. Furthermore, he would see to it that the "Ukraine" plank in the platform would be removed at their Convention and he would then begin to lift the sanctions that were imposed during the last days of the Obama Administration.
That was the "deal" that Donald Trump made with the Russians.
In the meantime, he would continue to do business as usual. At the top of his agenda was getting a piece of the action in that huge Russian oil field. He had never met Rex Tillerson, CEO of Exxon-Mobil, until these negotiations began. That was Carter Page's area and expertise. It was part of the continuing business deal when he nominated Tillerson as his SoS.
In my opinion, that is why there were so many connections and conversations between Trump's campaign and transition teams and the Russians, including the Russian ambassador. Jeff Sessions knew there was a big Russian deal in the works. Many Republicans knew about it, would be my guess?
Now, as of yesterday, we find out that Exxon-Mobil wants a special privilege and wants the US government to lift the sanctions on them so they can continue with the big oil deal in the sea north of Russia.
It's all about business.
