FactCheck.org: Sanders Wrong on Voter Turnout

Sanders Wrong on Voter Turnout

snip//

Sanders, April 16: So many of our people are giving up on the political process. It is very frightening. In the last presidential election, when Trump won, we had the lowest voter turnout over — in 20 years. And in the previous two years before that, in the midterm election, we had the lowest voter turnout in 70 years.

Sen. Bernie Sanders wrongly claimed that voter turnout in 2016 was “the lowest … in 20 years.” In fact, turnout was higher than it was in 2012.

The overall turnout was 60.2 percent in 2016, up from 58.6 percent four years earlier. In addition, the percentage of eligible voters casting ballots for president in 2016 was 59.3 percent — the third highest in the last 44 years. Only 2008 and 2004 were higher.

Thu Apr 20, 2017, 02:30 AM
Apr 2017

You really need to blame CNN for this if they got it wrong not Sanders. He probably read this report months ago and it stuck with him.

Washington (CNN)Voter turnout this year dipped to nearly its lowest point in two decades.

While election officials are still tabulating ballots, the 126 million votes already counted means about 55% of voting age citizens cast ballots this year.
That measure of turnout is the lowest in a presidential election since 1996, when 53.5% of voting-age citizens turned out.
As election officials go through outstanding ballots -- such as provisional ballots and those with write-ins -- the turnout figures will change.
But it would take another 18.7 million votes to reach the high point for turnout of 2008, when nearly 64% of voting age citizens cast a ballot.
Early results in some of the key states that propelled President-elect Donald Trump to his win reveal that more voters cast ballots this year than in 2012, even though overall turnout was down.

The things Bernie thinks are helpful I can't understand. Calling to primary a sitting Democratic President, claiming our Democratic nominee was not qualified to be President, calling the party corrupt and the primaries rigged. About as far as you can get from valid or constructive criticism.

Democratic party "corruption" has kept Bernie Sanders in Washington for the last twenty five years. He whines about "rigged" Democratic party processes, about insiders, about the party keeping the little guy out of power. Bernie Sanders is actually fine with all of that. As long as it benefits him. Take a look at his electoral history sometime. Did he go off about corruption when the Dems turned their back on Dolores Sandoval for him? How about all the other times he has benefited?

Backing an anti-abortion candidate and then dumping all over a great Democrat in a race that is pivotal for the party. If they didn't support Bernie in the primary, screw em. If they are favored by the likes of John Lewis, screw em. That's some winning unity there.

Trashing the party after being given a leadership role because this was somehow gonna unite the Democratic Party seems to be more damaging than ever. Perhaps he can look to other Democrats who have been working hard for the party for years on how to actually build and bring the party together. Because since he got in the spotlight, shit has gone nowhere but south.

142. Why do you think that Sanders is keeping his e-mail list to himself?
Thu Apr 20, 2017, 01:24 PM
Apr 2017

The only explanation that makes sense is that this preserves Sanders' ability to run as a third party candidate. Giving up the e-mail list would put this fear to rest.

Do you want Sanders to run as a third party candidate in 2020 assuming that he is willing to release his tax returns?

to continue spouting. This post has the potential to cause them cognitive dissonance. Somewhere deep down they recognize if he plays fast and loose with the facts that he can't be worthy of the deification they bestow on him and thus their religious devotion to him would be misplaced. Therefore they deflect and use all kinds of other defense mechanisms to try to reject your post.

104. That's because politifact hadsnt been following Bernie for long
Thu Apr 20, 2017, 09:34 AM
Apr 2017

They only started following him since he ran for President, I.e about 2 years. They have been following Hillary for over 12 years. So based on that, she issues about half the false statements per year that Bernie does.

Of course, this OP isn't about Hillary so your attempt to deflect is yet another example of Sanders supporters not wanting to face the truth.

103. Politifact has a problem with his wording moreso than the reality.
Thu Apr 20, 2017, 09:25 AM
Apr 2017

Asserting that "America and it's capitalist economic system is just fine" because Bernie said "twice as much" when the reality is "1 1/2 times as much"? Is that what we're going for here? Defending a war profiteer, tax dodger and polluter like Exxon Mobil because Bernie forgot about state and local taxes? That's like saying "Lay off that multi-millionaire - he pays 8% more taxes than you do!"

I can counter with just as many "Trues" and "Mostly Trues" regarding the economy and social issues.

Don't like the guy all you want. Doesn't matter to me. America has a glaring wealth distribution problem, medical bankruptcies continue to plague a nation that still doesn't regard health as a human right, women still get unequal pay, NO party is addressing capitalism's serious flaws and lack of a future for Millennials, Gen X and Retirees . . . . that isn't changing because of nit-picking. We need to do a better job of messaging.

Thu Apr 20, 2017, 11:19 AM
Apr 2017

... why would anyone have a problem with that? I think that most reasonable people would agree that it's important to be factual. Wouldn't you want to be corrected if someone noticed that you were repeatedly saying something that wasn't correct? Or, are you suggesting that people should just let-it-go and look-the-other-way?

He demurs that he doesn't know enough about Jon Ossoff's progressive bona fides to endorse him over a Republican opponent in an important special election for a Congressional seat, but he is solidly behind Tom Perriello who has an anti-choice and pro-NRA voting record as the more progressive Democrat in the VA gubernatorial primary.

that he's campaigning for a pro-lifer was a tiny one..

"As the Wall Street Journal's Reid J. Epstein and Natalie Andrews note, Mello in 2009 sponsored a bill that would require a woman to look at ultrasound images of her fetus before undergoing an abortion (he still opposes abortion rights). Indeed, it's tough to think of something that progressives would hate more."

Such as the CNN article already referenced, and this one: https://www.forbes.com/sites/omribenshahar/2016/11/17/the-non-voters-who-decided-the-election-trump-won-because-of-lower-democratic-turnout

Especially in America, where it somehow takes us weeks or months to finish counting ballots, even with help from machines, and where we might decide just not to count them at all. A lot of people were fooled by apparently lowish turnout at the time, including some who want to blame Sanders as the source.

The OP is about as technically correct as Sanders would have been when those numbers were fresh...but because Sanders isn't quite a Democrat, last year's rage can finally be vented here in safety.

false narrative.

We waste time, effort and $ addressing "facts" that are actually fictions. It's diversionary and counter-productive.

Sanders' citing of these fictions as facts that need to be dealt with is akin to saying that the reason the market for buggy whips collapsed was because the manufacturers failed to come up with a cheaper version of the product that poor people could afford, even if they didn't own a buggy.
