Sanders Wrong on Voter Turnoutsnip//
Sen. Bernie Sanders wrongly claimed that voter turnout in 2016 was the lowest in 20 years. In fact, turnout was higher than it was in 2012.
The overall turnout was 60.2 percent in 2016, up from 58.6 percent four years earlier. In addition, the percentage of eligible voters casting ballots for president in 2016 was 59.3 percent the third highest in the last 44 years. Only 2008 and 2004 were higher.

(28,946 posts)You really need to blame CNN for this if they got it wrong not Sanders. He probably read this report months ago and it stuck with him.
Washington (CNN)Voter turnout this year dipped to nearly its lowest point in two decades.
While election officials are still tabulating ballots, the 126 million votes already counted means about 55% of voting age citizens cast ballots this year.
That measure of turnout is the lowest in a presidential election since 1996, when 53.5% of voting-age citizens turned out.
As election officials go through outstanding ballots -- such as provisional ballots and those with write-ins -- the turnout figures will change.
But it would take another 18.7 million votes to reach the high point for turnout of 2008, when nearly 64% of voting age citizens cast a ballot.
Early results in some of the key states that propelled President-elect Donald Trump to his win reveal that more voters cast ballots this year than in 2012, even though overall turnout was down.

(50,278 posts)I want Democrats to unify not split.
The things Bernie thinks are helpful I can't understand. Calling to primary a sitting Democratic President, claiming our Democratic nominee was not qualified to be President, calling the party corrupt and the primaries rigged. About as far as you can get from valid or constructive criticism.
Democratic party "corruption" has kept Bernie Sanders in Washington for the last twenty five years. He whines about "rigged" Democratic party processes, about insiders, about the party keeping the little guy out of power. Bernie Sanders is actually fine with all of that. As long as it benefits him. Take a look at his electoral history sometime. Did he go off about corruption when the Dems turned their back on Dolores Sandoval for him? How about all the other times he has benefited?
Backing an anti-abortion candidate and then dumping all over a great Democrat in a race that is pivotal for the party. If they didn't support Bernie in the primary, screw em. If they are favored by the likes of John Lewis, screw em. That's some winning unity there.
Trashing the party after being given a leadership role because this was somehow gonna unite the Democratic Party seems to be more damaging than ever. Perhaps he can look to other Democrats who have been working hard for the party for years on how to actually build and bring the party together. Because since he got in the spotlight, shit has gone nowhere but south.

(24,461 posts)Asserting that "America and it's capitalist economic system is just fine" because Bernie said "twice as much" when the reality is "1 1/2 times as much"? Is that what we're going for here? Defending a war profiteer, tax dodger and polluter like Exxon Mobil because Bernie forgot about state and local taxes? That's like saying "Lay off that multi-millionaire - he pays 8% more taxes than you do!"
I can counter with just as many "Trues" and "Mostly Trues" regarding the economy and social issues.
Don't like the guy all you want. Doesn't matter to me. America has a glaring wealth distribution problem, medical bankruptcies continue to plague a nation that still doesn't regard health as a human right, women still get unequal pay, NO party is addressing capitalism's serious flaws and lack of a future for Millennials, Gen X and Retirees . . . . that isn't changing because of nit-picking. Especially in America, where it somehow takes us weeks or months to finish counting ballots, even with help from machines, and where we might decide just not to count them at all. A lot of people were fooled by apparently lowish turnout at the time, including some who want to blame Sanders as the source.
The OP is about as technically correct as Sanders would have been when those numbers were fresh...but because Sanders isn't quite a Democrat, last year's rage can finally be vented here in safety.
