Handel has the tag of loser and the big money has been supporting Gray, a Pense clone.
How quite and what will it take is up to Georgia and Trump. I'm assuming that Trump will find an ambassador to Belize opening, or another fun place to be..

We have a song for that, "They can't do that" after they do that.

(10,174 posts)step aside for somebody she beat? Even in the Republican Party the primary victory has to mean something.

(111,327 posts)You bet the victory means something. If they think she'll lose the runoff, they'll have to come up with a plum job, preferably in DC. I hear Dolt45 has a lot of positions to fill and can't find anyone to fill them.

(82,849 posts)But I don't know if there's a mechanism for Handel to step aside. The so-called jungle primary is supposed to yield a top two 1 vs. 2 matchup (barring the top vote-getter getting a majority of the vote). I don't know if number 2 can just drop out. Ordinarily, when a qualified candidate drops out, the candidate's party gets to name a replacement. But since the open primary doesn't guarantee a two party race, I don't know if there's a provision in Georgia election law for a party to replace a qualifying candidate.

But I'm just posting my opinion, it's up to Ossoff and his staff to do the research and find out, they better make it part of their planning for a Gray switch.

(82,849 posts)But the run-off election is already underway. I don't think any new law could be fashioned that would interfere with an election already in process. Courts, like casinos, generally don't look favorably on changes in the rules once the game has begun. The legislature could make changes to the way run-offs are conducted in the future, but this election ship has already sailed.
Again, though, I don't know Georgia election law. There may be an "Oops, I didn't think I'd do so well" clause that allows one of the top two vote-getters to back out, but I think there's an expectation that a candidate is running for office to win. On the list of concerns for the Ossoff campaign, I think Handel dropping out should be in the high double digits.
