There's an old saying that a Puritan is someone who sits up all night worrying that someone, somewhere is having a good time. That might fit Republicans if they weren't such hypocrites.
Let's face it. The Republican Party is a criminal enterprise that is interested in only control, power and attaining wealth. And as for sex and marijuana, it's okay as long as they are the ones smoking weed or screwing a yak.
But since they think they need to look "holier than thou" to the imbecile part of their base, they rail against the evils of screwing and puffing.
They're about to kick off a new "war on drugs" and marijuana is high on their list. I wonder how long it will be before they bring back chastity belts and start branding women with a scarlet A.
Republicans politicians are among the worst dicks in the world. And anyone who disagrees, just look at the tons of crap they're putting up with from their so-called president

(2,108 posts)Money. It's always about following the money with Repubs.
If more people have access to marijuana to treat their ills or relax their minds, well that cuts in pharmaceutical industry and could calm down the hate industry. And they do well with both.

They are also a bit like the elites in "A Handmaid's Tale"; forbidding pleasures to the great unwashed masses but indulging themselves.
I think Republicons often suppose that 'lesser people' than they (poor, perhaps people of color, lower middle class) are not as sophisticated as they and not as 'capable' of indulging without descending into decadence and slovenly decrepitude.
Hence porn consumption rates are highest in red states.

(34,845 posts)Why does O'Reilly sexually harass women? Because he is fundamentally incapable of forming a relationship, even a one-night stand outside of paying for one. It's the same across the board, Hannity, Limbaugh and the others. When they rail against sex and women, they are simply advertising to the world that their own lives are miserable and that they feel like failures.
And they are too stupid to understand how much they embarrass themselves by this.

(23,147 posts)They use both to make $$ and push their evil agenda. Sex is used to control women because too many men are afraid of us or hate us and either way want us under their thumbs.
MJ is used to make $ for the private prison industry who pays their water carriers well and to keep brown people from voting. That's why Sessions is pushing to reinforce those laws, he wants more brown people in private prisons. They paid him to increase incarceration, and by damn, that's what he's going to do.
The thing is this makes for great ads for Dems.

(32,640 posts)First - to give the bureau that enforced prohibition something to do after it was repealed, and secondly, to give institutional racism a justification.
Marijuana is taken by musicians, he told Congress in 1937, And Im not speaking about good musicians, but the jazz type. Although the La Guardia Committee would refute almost everything Anslinger testified to about the effects of smoking pot, the damage was already done. (Anslingers prosecution of jazz musicians, particularly Louis Armstrongparalleled that of another power-mad, paranoid bureaucrat, J. Edgar Hoover.)
Anslinger did not simply dislike jazz. He feared it. It sounded, he wrote, like the jungles in the dead of night. In jazz, unbelievably ancient indecent rites of the East Indies are resurrected. And the lives of jazz musicians reek of filth.
It's worth noting that while Judy Garland was told to "get help" by the authorities for her drug use, Billie Holiday was prosecuted, and prohibited from performing in any venue that served alcohol.
They only hate sex when it's a woman who is doing it for pleasure. The threat of unwanted pregnancy is a behavior modification tool, and allows them to monitor women's sexual activity.
If a woman is not at home with children, then there's a chance she will be competing with men in the workplace and community leadership. And we've seen how a woman (especially an older woman who doesn't seem to be cowed by the disapproval of men) is treated when she dares to think she's qualified to be president.
Having sex AND being in the public sphere is the privilege of men, not women. Men in the workplace and leadership are assumed to have a full time domestic to handle things there to make it possible for him to give his important work the priority it deserves.

(15,051 posts)that's a horrible piece of propaganda made in 1938. It's, outrageous and laughable, but many people obviously took it seriously. The link below is to the entire film on Google. It's a bit over an hour, but good for a chuckle (or a puke) if you have an hous or so.

(65,150 posts)I've looked into the history of that movie and there is no connection to any governmental or policing agency. In fact, the whole thing is more a cynical attempt to financially capitalize on a growing hysteria about the drug. The producers of that film were essentially neutral on pot use, and didn't care whether the government approved or not.
By pretending to be way over the top anti-drug, they actually got away with showing people smoking it in an era where the Hayes people never would have allowed it.
So, while it ended up later being USED as propaganda, (although with laughably poor results), the movie makers did not intend that as it's use. They did it to make money.
