GOP rep scolds crowd, 'Do you yell in church?' Crowd shouts back, 'Do you lie in church?'

GOP rep scolds crowd, 'Do you yell in church?' Crowd shouts back, 'Do you lie in church?'

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (CA-01) engaged in one of the longest and most raucous town halls of 2017. He was repeatedly shouted down while trying to defend the Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and his support of Donald Trump. At one point, LaMalfa scolded the Oroville crowd, asking “Do you yell in church?” From CBS 13:

“Do you yell at church?” LaMalfa asked the crowd at one point. That comment was met with intense booing and shouts of “Do you lie in church?”

After fielding several questions and hearing comments on a range of issues, LaMalfa moved on to healthcare where he struggled through a PowerPoint presentation. His narration was hard to follow as shouts continued from the crowd.

At one point, the congressman walked off stage, returning a few moments later to finish his presentation amidst the noise.

Curiously, the CBS report mentioned above seems keenly focused on the so-called bad behavior of the constituents in attendance, interviewing several LaMalfa supporters. No mention of why the crowd turned on the congressman. George Johnston, a reporter at The Orion, Chico State’s student newspaper, was liveblogging the town hall and provided a lot more insight into why the crowd became so disruptive. Take a look at some of the constituent questions and LaMalfa’s painful responses.

Good. I hope every gawddamned repub "representative" is scared shitless of showing their face in their own district.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Hole up in your capitol hill offices and subsist on fish head soup, for all I care.

Rep. John J. Duncan Jr. Rejects Town Hall Meeting, Citing “Kooks, Extremists And Radicals”

Yeah, right. We Dems are "radicals." They more or less get away with such labels in a blood-red southern state.

Young Reynolds opined: "“Night and day. It’s hard to believe that these people are grown adults and those people, the people at my high school are children. You’d think it was the opposite,” said Reynolds.

Having been married to a high school Civics teacher, this offered perspective is laughable. How are kids supposed to have a grasp of the complexity of the issues? And wouldn't they have been chastised for being unruly in front of a congressman? Kids are still expected to respect their elders. The news production staff had to show this shit to try and get a groan out of their audience. Stupid (or "SAD&quot .

They have some supplemental coverage from the Chico State student newspaper in the story. Apparently Rep. LaMalfa thinks that if taxpayers help pay for women's health care, Congress should have a say over other aspects of women's lives, namely reproduction. There is no concomitant dictum from him about taxpayer subsidizing men's health care, and whether that gives Congress the right to legislate other areas of men's lives.

He also simultaneously holds the position that taxpayers should pay for religious and charter schools, but apparently have no say in how those institutions should be run. He seems kind of mixed up to me.

Aside from the fact that some people do shout in church, this was a political event, not church. On what basis was he making this comparison?
