"I'm not sure Japan will be that interested" in a new deal, said Miriam Sapiro, who served as acting U.S. trade representative under President Barack Obama and is now a partner at PR firm Finsbury. "Some concessions that Japan made because the U.S. asked might not make sense in a bilateral agreement."

(1,154 posts)I'm wondering about grain futures as well. Trump's mex hate is causing Mexico to shop for corn elsewhere. I'm from Iowa, I know a lot of those old corn/grain farmers voted for Hair Fuhrer. I imagine they will live to regret that.

(82,849 posts)But here's another stakeholder group looking for President Trump to come through for them. This is an excellent opportunity for Democrats to hold a rally or a meeting in rancher strongholds, and remind them of the good things Democrats have done for them. Chat with local media to get our message out without the filter of Fox News; even in sparsely populated areas, people still get news from the local newspaper and radio outlets. It would also encourage the Democrats in those areas trying to fight the good fight to see that they're not alone.

(11,175 posts)The votes in Congress weren't there. That's why Obama never pressed for approval of TPP, not even in a lame-duck session as some had speculated.
Clinton, who had supported it while in office, came out against it during the campaign. If she had become President, she probably wouldn't have tried to get it through Congress, either.
