Boston usually takes the day off because of the Marathon, calling it Patriots Day, the third Monday in April which neatly coincides with Easter many years.

I guess office workers elsewhere rebelled about having a heavy work holiday that was close behind Thanksgiving and Xmas in terms of food and preparation and having to put up with family but without having an actual day off to do some of it--or recover once it was over.

It's a holiday observed in DC. Not sure about other states (Florida celebrates on May 20, Texas on June 19, Puerto Rico on March 22).

until I was a teenager, get up earlier than they did and put on a dress and go hide in the woods, then come sauntering back when they were ready to leave and claim I'd gone early. It worked, too.

They became twice a year Christians in their late 60s, died unbelievers with no hope of heaven or fear of hell.

meaning I worked lots of weekends and holidays, I've long thought that if a holiday happens to fall on a Saturday or Sunday, regular office workers shouldn't get the Friday or Monday off. That's an oddly unpopular opinion.
