'The girls streamed into what once served as a dining room at a Sleep Inn in Queens, ready to begin their meeting with a roll call.
One by one came the names: Jessica. Luz, recited Karina, a fifth grader. Carmen?
The room was small enough that Karina could easily see who was there and who was not. But this was a meeting of Girl Scout Troop 6000, where girls learn to be leaders, and protocol is to be followed.
Troop 6000 is the first in New York City designated solely for homeless girls. All of the members live at the Sleep Inn, where the city has taken over all 10 floors to accommodate about 100 homeless families.
In a way, the troop, created in February, is a reflection of the state of homelessness in the city. Within the Girl Scouts of Greater New York, troop numbers are determined by the citys five boroughs, with the 1000s in the Bronx, 2000s in Brooklyn and so on. But the members of Troop 6000 would not necessarily identify Queens as their home, so Girl Scout leaders extended the numerical sequence.'>>>

(3,445 posts)It's difficult because many times they are not always consistent in coming to school, and some transition out to regular school when they find a place to live (yay), but we believe it's important to help these girls have as normal a life as possible, no matter their circumstance. #proudtobeaGirlScout

(990 posts)I'm a life-long Girl Scout....and a leader until my daughter graduated from HS.
Still love running into my girls around town...and meeting their children and spouses.
Scouting will give those homeless girls confidence, leadership skills and a sisterhood.

Love this story! Thanks!
