Donald Trump will not release any tax returns or business connections unless required...

...by legal force.

Or if it is to his personal benefit to do so.

Otherwise, he doesn't give a damn.

Just as when he paid off the $25 million dollar lawsuit for defrauding people with his Trump University. It was not in his interest to fight it out in court. He would have lost the case. So, in his own personal interest, he decided to settle for $25 million dollars.

Still, he made money off the scam. It is estimated he made nearly $100 million dollars off all the "students" at his University. He still came out far ahead.

He will not turn over his tax returns unless he is forced to do so.

he'd have released the returns a long time ago, just to try to make the Dems look foolish if for no other reason. Obviously he does have something to hide. Whatever his relationship is with Russia, it almost certainly involves shady financial transactions - money laundering and tax evasion, most likely. What's not in his tax returns would probably be as revealing as what's in them.
