Trumps millennial problem: The snowflakes are becoming a blizzard
Polls show the majority of millennials view Trump as an illegitimate president, and they don't like Ivanka either
SOPHIA A. MCCLENNEN
Millennials, those born between 1981 and 1997, have become the generation the right loves to hate. Only days after the November election, Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway appeared on Fox News Channels Hannity to discuss the outbreak of anti-Trump protests. Rather than take seriously the issues that voters were protesting, Conway chose to use this as an opportunity to denigrate young voters: We are just treating these adolescents and millennials like precious snowflakes.
Accusations of being snowflakes, entitled, whiners and slackers have constantly been leveled at our nations young adults. Theyve even been described as the lamest generation. But the attacks on millennials by those on the right have been especially vicious. Back in 2015 Breitbart ran 7 Reasons Millennials are the Worst Generation.
The right-wing attacks on millennials arent just vicious; they are old and tired. In fact, Trump supporter Bill OReilly gets credit for being at the forefront of these assaults. Well before his recent scandal, OReilly had trouble attracting the younger demographic to his caustic punditry. His viewers traditionally skew to seniors. Rather than think about why younger viewers didnt want to tune in to his show, he referred to young viewers who preferred Jon Stewart as stoned slackers.
There is nothing new about older generations insulting the young; even the so-called Greatest Generation was criticized for being over-mothered. But the attacks on millennials do have a new edge and intensity to them. Political scientist Russell Dalton argues that millennial Americans may be the most disparaged generation of young people in our nations history.

(2,809 posts)Riding the coat-tails of boomer-age affordability to attend college, I can still recall a fact that is now astounding:
In the mid-1980's, I paid 380 a month on a 5th floor studio apartment with a fireplace, in San Francisco.
I was often late on my rent, often had to take out payday loans to keep a roof over my head. My old retiree landlord was very forgiving and bent over backwards to accommodate my problems.
That same apartment now rents for over ten times that amount.
I do take some issue with millennial complacency, and fully believe it is the RW spinners who are perpetuating the meme amongst them that "Your vote makes no difference".
