and I just put in a request for purchase at my local library for it.

Big philanthropic donations garner big attention. And any criticism of them often comes long after the ribbon-cutting, and even then it can seem churlish. These megadonors are giving money to benefit the public good that they could be spending on jets, estates and club memberships — or in most cases, more of the above.

David Callahan, author of “The Givers: Money, Power and Philanthropy in a New Gilded Age,” published this week by Knopf, sees both sides of the story, with a healthy dose of skepticism. His interest from the first pages is to examine “the power of philanthropists to shape America.”
