What is a union hall? I am asking here rather than googling so Du'ers

who are from states that actually had unions will understand just how different it is in states that didn't have them.

I have spent my entire life in SC. And I'm old enough for Medicare.

I've heard "union hall" mentioned in some old rock songs. "Rip it Up" was one such song, and there was another old song I've heard recently. It'll probably come to me in a few hours. LOL.

2. A union hall is where union elections are held, contracts are

discussed and ratified or not...my son is laid off...he went down to the union hall to discuss benefits and transfers. Politicians (Democrats) often go to the union hall.

3. It varies, depending on the type of union

Halls for the trade unions, i.e., plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc., may have classrooms and shops for apprentice and continuing education. They may also serve as employment centers where journeymen gather to find open positions.

In all instances, union halls hold closed meetings for the executive committee and open meetings for the membership. Additionally, many unions hold parties in teir halls for their members; I've seen some rent their halls to the public for wedding receptions and the like.

7. There are a couple big union halls in Houston

There is one right next to the Harris County Democratic Party headquarters in Houston

8. Never went myself, but I remember my dad talking...

and when he was between regular full time jobs, before unemployment he would go to the Teamsters Union Hall to see if there were any jobs avaliable. The Teamsters were kings back in the day, for good and/or evil, and I assume the local trucking/shipping companies would go there to find drivers first.

9. We had a place called the Labor Temple up in Wisconsin

It had a bar and a dance hall. It was rented out for weddings. I went to alot of events there.
Apparently it is still popular gathering place.
I'm sure they held union meetings there.
I lived in a working class neighborhood amongst factory workers who were all in unions.

(My dad wasn't in a union, he was retired military and a manager at a commuter airline, so I'm not familiar with the union details. My parents moved to Texas when I was in college and I followed suit a few years later. )

10. Former co worker had a unpleasant experience

A former co worker told me often about their local UAW union at a auto brake supplier 30 years ago and how they had paid extra dues and held fundraisers into a fund to build a local union hall.

The plant closed before it was built and instead of returning the money to the now unemployed workers, the international UAW seized it and told them to pound sand. She hated unions from that point forward
