The Times of London:
The White House has made clear it regards the carriage procession down the Mall as an essential element of the itinerary for the visit currently planned for the second week of October, according to officials.
Security sources have warned, however, that the procession will require a monster security operation, far greater than for any recent state visit.
The Metropolitan Police was already gearing up for the biggest public order operation in several years, with tens of thousands of people expected to descend on the area to protest. Senior police are already grappling with how to achieve a balance between Mr Trumps security and allowing the publics right to demonstrate. One source said that Mr Trumps decision to opt for the carriage, rather than the bullet and bomb-proof car that was used by his predecessor presented a range of fresh headaches.

(15,543 posts)Screw that. I'm an American, and I don't bow down to, or kiss any freaking "royal" ass whether it comes from England or a freaking sleazeball New Jersey Casino.
Latter Day republicans might go all submissive for that hierarchical shit and for casino con men, but decent and dignified Americans rejected that crap long ago.

I thought there was a vote to keep him out with no state dinner hoopla.

He came from money. You too could be extremely wealthy if you began with millions and knew how to work real estate scams. Not to mention casinos. And how to not pay taxes through bankruptcies that don't touch your assets.

(19,204 posts)teams of lawyers and negotiators - who he pays quite handsomely - to hammer out the specifics of all contracts. Trump signs them, much like his Oval Office, 'Executive Order', signing ceremonies. He makes a big deal of it, going so far as having "The Art of the Deal" - a work of pure fiction - ghost written for him. His 'Executive Order' signing ceremonies are always attended by as many toadies as possible, with Trump holding them up for all to see, like a 9 year old country hayseed holding up his 3rd place, 4H, hog raising ribbon.
Trump doesn't have the mental capacity to negotiate these deals himself. He's far too busy looking for mirrors in which to admire his own likeness.

(1,701 posts)What right does he have to make such a demand? It is usually the hosts who establish the terms of the visit, not the guest, isn't it? Why should the Queen degrade herself and her country (and embarrass all decent Americans) by acceding to the wishes of this vulgar, narcissistic fool?

(2,559 posts)Trump, whether anyone likes is, is a head of state, and one of the Queen's major duties, as head of state, is to greet other visiting heads of state. She'd get into a lot of trouble with Parliament if she refused - at least with the ruling Conservative majority.
However there are other ways she can express her disapproval. Not being royalty myself, I don't know what, but it would be highly entertaining to see what nuances she uses to express her revulsion.
Maybe her corgis can stage a sneak attack on Trump's nether regions.

(19,204 posts)have to abide by the rules and traditions enjoyed by the Queen, though? Never to leave a room with your back toward the Queen, etc? I can see this orange bull in a china shop making a mockery of the Queens pomp and circumstance.
He will, no doubt, demand it of everyone upon his return to the U.S. The usual air of respect and authority given a President of the United States won't seem nearly as magnificent as he deems necessary for a man of his ________ (fill in the blank).
zentrum
(9,865 posts)...there being debates in Parliament about preventing his visit. I know there are ways to use the rules to say the visit cannot occur until Parliament has submitted to such and such a rule etc. Ways ot use procedure. The Brits are good at that.
She's old. She can beg off. Some lesser royal can meet with him. Charles probably. But it sure would be a greatly deflated photo-op if it wasn't her.
I think there are things she can do to diminish the impact of this for his stature.

(16,439 posts)The Queen's favorite residence (other than Balmoral) is Windsor Castle. If everything is done at Buck House in London then that could give at least one clue. During Obama's last visit to the U.K. he was invited to Windsor. I think it's saved for people she really likes. And they have had many state dinners at Windsor as well. My hunch is that they don't have much use for Trump if for no other reason than he is "new money". In general the Brits don't care for braggarts either.

(25,517 posts)I don't even know if they are bullet proof. I wouldn't be surprised if most presidents in recent history have stuck with their own motorcade.
The Times is behind a paywall, Huffington Post also has an article:
Sources told The Times that the carriage was not as secure as the presidents traditional armored vehicle that is bulletproof, protects against a chemical attack, and can withstand a small bomb.
Security officials are preparing for massive protests during Trumps visit, which The Times reported will require unprecedented security. The Evening Standard reported in February that policing costs for the visit could be up to 7 million pounds.
The vehicle which carries the president of the United States is a spectacular vehicle. It is designed to withstand a massive attack like a low-level rocket grenade, a source told The Times. If hes in that vehicle he is incredibly well protected and on top of that it can travel at enormous speed. If he is in a golden coach being dragged up the Mall by a couple of horses, the risk factor is dramatically increased.
