Cut & pasted from his FB page. This is someone I actually know and have worked with, not just an anonymous FB friend. He's an author. I trust that this account is of his flight yesterday is factual;
"Here's another United Airlines "moment": Yesterday, they called for boarding of a small-plane flight from Newark to Providence, which I was on (about 30 passengers). It was overbooked. After asking for volunteers, the boarding agent said, and I quote, "Mr. (won't give name), you will not be flying due to excessive weight, and the weight restrictions on this aircraft." Said it for all of us to hear. To his credit, one man walked up, asked for the agent's name, said, "that man can have my seat," and marched toward an airport office to find a supervisor. To reference your most famous ad, United, the skies might be friendly, but you're not."
Fly the friendly skies, indeed.

(23,322 posts)my husband , son and I are flying to Denver in May to see Tom Petty. We could only fly United...Every other airline was multiple stops, more money and/or an overnight layover. I'm bummed we had to use them but I'll be ready and waiting for any baloney from them. There's a reason my family nickname is the Terminator. 😡

(554 posts)This is actually very common, and has nothing to do with the weight of the passenger. As passengers check in for a flight, the total aircraft weight (Estimated for people by count, but measured for checked baggage) grows. Airlines will often bump a passenger based on his or her total contribution to aircraft weight (Based on weighed baggage). Sometimes they will move the bag to another flight but not the passenger (Although that's not likely on your friend's route). If your friend was flying Newark to Providence, he or she was very likely on a Dash-8 turboprop or a small Embraer jet, both of which are very sensitive to weight (Although both seat more than 30). It doesn't help that the FAA estimate of per-passenger weight increases periodically.
Having passed a million miles long ago and approaching 2, I've seen and experienced most of these things plenty, over most of the major air players. Heck 2 weeks ago I had a bag moved between Delta airplanes for the same reason.
