If you enter Ivanka Trumps childhood bedroom, located on the 68th floor of Trump Tower, you will find, among other things: A clock featuring Madonnas face. A series of 90210 trading cards. An homage to Poison and Mötley Crüe, in the form of several posters. Over here, some artwork that she made herself my interesting attempt at color painting, she quips. Framed photos and figurines line her white shelves. The walls are petal pink; the furniture is white lacquer. A teddy bear rests on her single bed ...
The footage is courtesy of Born Rich, a 2003 documentary directed by Jamie Johnson, heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune. The project, in which Johnson spent a couple of years interviewing 10 of his fellow deep-pocketed cohorts, began as his thesis at NYU, but eventually morphed into something larger and more grotesque. What, Jamie muses as the film opens, on the eve of his 21st birthday, did any of them do to earn the sort of money they had? All I did was inherit it, he says bleakly ...
... only one of the cloistered figures featured here has recently ascended to the West Wing, where she maintains an office just down the hall from her father the most powerful man in the free world. The sheltered teen with the Poison posters now has a hand in policy decisions with far-reaching, lasting impact, nepotism statutes and conflict of interest laws be damned. Her father, who after just 11 weeks in office has found himself vastly out of his depth, relies heavily on her guidance.
What Born Rich taught me is that Ivanka has always been the sameutterly blind to her own privilege, and devoid of empathy for anyone whose Madonna clock was hung, say, on the wall of a trailer or public housing, rather than a Central Park-facing, multi-million dollar apartment ...

(58,785 posts)have been friends, and I do not think that would be the case if she were as detractors imagine. She may well be a very ordinary person under that Barbie doll exterior, with a typically full basket of faults; but, remember, she has a very weird father who would have disappeared from her life long ago if she did not play the role HE required her to in HIS life.
And to retain any influence in that shark tank these days, she has to seem to be, more than ever, what he wants her to be. What that is, we do not know. What she herself really is, again, we have no real way of knowing. Certainly, this resentful, class-warfare, hit-job article is not enlightening. But let's hope she's at very least concerned for the world her children will inherit as she maneuvers in an incredibly difficult and unbelievably high-stakes situation.
The very least we can do--for ourselves--is to not rush to join the Hill haters at the bottom in some nasty partisan indulgence of the unfortunate parts of our characters. Just look at what that's done to them.

(24,566 posts)I have seen no redeeming virtues. However, I do appreciate what you are saying, Hortensis. None of us know her, and she has had an upbringing that is off the charts weird. If trump manages to stay in power long enough maybe we will see if there is good character behind the hard Barbie facade. I agree that joining the haters is not where any of us need to be.

(89,250 posts)and the usual new york social life stuff they would have in common. but i don't think they were close friends .

(58,785 posts)Chelsea wouldn't exactly be hurting for friends, after all, quite the opposite, and people met in groups are easy to blow off with a courteous smile or nod at most. I was surprised when I first read they were friends, not just belonging to some of the same circles, but I think this is an indicator. The trashed version of Ivanka being presented here doesn't fit that picture at all.
For the trashers, I meant it about those Hill-deranged and Dem-deranged people being cautionary tales. They're so invested in justifying their attitudes, and of course enjoying the trashing, by adopting more and more lies, never ending, that most are no longer capable of understanding public affairs, a sort of self-imposed insanity.

(37,748 posts)When you find out how caring, charitable, intelligent, insightful and deep she is, by all means let us know, else your own speculation is as baseless as is everyone else's going on in the here and now; and carries the same weight, ethical and righteous indignation aside...
