Republicans allowed Assad to KILL OFF hundreds of thousands of Syrians! OR PUSH OUT AS 8 million REFUGEES HALF THE POPULATION.

As usual.

One wild and crazy possibility is that Republicans panicked about his tanking poll numbers and Russiagate maybe taking them down with him and told him (or threatened him) to create a giant headline changer with bombs to try to turn things around.

But then...I remember suspecting the Republicans' Iraq WMD scare mongering was probably a giant headline changer at the time of Coleen Rowley's testimony to Congress, and that once they had put something that significant out there they couldn't take it back and had to act on it.
