Megan Mullally sang Green Acres with Trump...what happened after
SHE HOLDS the odd distinction of having sung a duet on television with the current president of the United States. This was at the Emmy Awards, back in 2005, when both she and Donald Trump were stars of hit NBC programs.
MORE SPECIFICALLY, she and Trump performed the theme from Green Acres—she in characteristic Karen Walker–wear, he in uncharacteristic bib overalls, a white T-shirt, and a straw hat—as part of an American Idol– mimicking segment called “Emmy Idol,” wherein viewers were invited to vote for their favorite performance of a classic TV-show theme by current TV stars.
SHE AND Trump won. She recalls that he took the meaningless contest inordinately seriously. The following day, Trump called her and said, “Listen, we really needed to win that, and we did. And you were a big part of that. And we crushed them. It wasn’t even close. It was a landslide.”
SHE BELIEVED at the time that Trump was “adopting the persona of a comedic, arrogant, entitled sort of person,” she says, and was amused by what she perceived to be his shtick.
SHE NO longer believes what she witnessed to be a persona, and no longer finds him amusing.
