Don Rickles has passed.

Abrasive comic Don Rickles, the honorary Rat Pack member and celebrity roast guest whose career spanned six decades, has died. He was 90.

Rickles died Thursday morning at his home in Los Angeles from kidney failure, his longtime publicist Paul Shefrin confirmed. He would have turned 91 on May 8.

Though he appeared in films and on television, Rickles’ mainstay was always nightclub performances, appearing in Las Vegas and elsewhere into his late 80s. He also found late success as the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the “Toy Story” films, which were exceptional box office performers, and popped up frequently on latenight talkshows.

Rickles’ career had its ups and downs as comedic tastes changed, and his curmudgeonly persona was sometimes out of kilter with audience tastes, but he survived long after many of his contemporaries had disappeared into retirement. And when he was hot, he was a potent club headliner, insulting his audience with his two key signature phrases “dummy” and “hockey puck.”

He would want us to joke.

He was relentlessly funny even when he broke the rules. Especially then, some would say.

It takes a special talent to make that sort of routine and personality consistently hilarious. I wasn't around for his prime, but I love staying up late watching the celebrity roasts.

Kelly's Heroes:

Run Silent, Run Deep:

The first is a fun WWII escapade, albeit with copious anachronisms. The second is a definitive WWII submarine action film, directed by Robert Wise.

Rickles does good character work in both.

He was the only one that was funny to me. Bob Hope was cheesy and not good for me. Someone mentioned Dangerfield, also funny as hell.

Rickles was always on his game and funny as hell.

I heard. I saw him a lot on tv in the old days. I don't think I ever laughed even once. Not my thing. But he had a lot of close friends, so I think he was probably a nice guy and a good friend.

He was plain old nasty and mean. Even as a child he repulsed me. Came across as an angry, unloved and unlikable person.

It is seemingly daily now, the passing of heroes and icons from that era. Time just flies....100 years since WWl began. 1987 is now 30 freaking years ago.

Of course people like Mr Rickles are still here on our vast media landscape.
