http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/04/05/the-whatsapp-chat-that-nails-putin-s-mafia-state.htmlIn 2007, agents of the russian Ministry of the Interior raided the offices of Hermitage Capital in Moscow. They confiscated documents and stamps.
Using these documents and stamps SOMEBODY re-registered 3 subsidiaries of Hermitage Capital to a new owner.
Those companies were then sued for damages. In one case, the lawyer defending the companies, Andrey Pavlov, also represented the plaintiff. In the same case, in the same court.
The lawyer plead guilty and the companies paid the damages.
Then they applied for a $230 million tax-refund from the russian government due to their losses.
This $230 million tax-refund was processed within less than 24 hours.
All this was uncovered by the russian lawyer Magnitsky. For that he got arrested, beaten to death in jail and put on trial posthumously. (Not kidding.)
So we have:
- corrupt russian agents of the Ministry of the Interior
- corrupt russian judges
- corrupt russian prison-guards
- corrupt russian tax officials in the Ministry of Finance
- a lawyer, Andrey Pavlov, who is linked to a russian crime-syndicate known as the "Klyuev Group"
Now russian journalists have unearthed Whatsapp-logs:
Oleg Urzhumtsev, former from the Ministry of the Interior, was the guy who brought charges on Magnitsky and exonerated Pavlov.
Oleg Urzhumtsev was planning a cover-up via Whatsapp to commision a fake forensic study that would prove that the confiscated stamps of Hermitage Capital don't match the stamps used to transfer ownership of the companies and therefore the "Klyuev Group" is completely innocent.
Which makes it all the more interesting that in a tranche of hacked and publicly leaked emails belonging to Pavlov, the alleged consigliere is shown conversing with Urzhumtsev in 2013 (six years after the original crime) and giving him instructions as to how to retroactively exonerate the Klyuev Group.
Pavlov confirmed the authenticity of the emails in a legal complaint he filed in Moscow to try and prevent independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta from publishing them. They contain several days worth of WhatsApp communications between the consigliere and the ex-Interior Ministry official, which go a long way toward vindicating Magnitskys gumshoe exposé.
...
What the WhatsApp conversation constitutes is hard documentary proof that Sergei Magnitsky died for being correct. He exposed a sophisticated and cynical swindle by the mafia state Vladimir Putin has spent close to two decades constructing and protecting.
The conversation also shows that Western legislatures, facing a fierce lobbying campaign by agents of the Kremlin and pushback from bureaucracies in their own governments, have been right to honor Magnitskys memory by blacklisting the crooks, thieves, and thugs responsible for bleeding their country dry while terminating this patriotic lawyer to save their own hides.
