http://www.lettersofnote.com/2011/06/special-instructions-to-players.html

On being remonstrated with by his fellow-players, who told him there were ladies present, he retorted he didn't give a damn, that they had no business there anyhow.

This shocking indecency was brought to the attention of the League at the Philadelphia meeting in November, 1897, and a committee was appointed to report upon this baseball crime, define and suggest for it a remedy.

In response to nearly one hundred communications addressed to umpires, managers and club officials, soliciting definite, positive and personal knowledge of obscene and indecent language upon the ball field, the committee received a deluge of information that was so appalling as to be almost beyond belief, showing conclusively and beyond contradiction that there was urgent need for legislative action on the part of the League.

The best part of the whole letter, which every player had to sign and return to his manager?

(UNMAILABLE. Must be forwarded by Express)

(It contained examples of the language the League was trying to get rid of - and it was so explicit the League would have run afoul of federal obscenity laws by mailing these.)

and knows he'll never look as cool as Barack Obama, or have nearly as many people cheering. I was there today, it was so much more awesome without that orange troll. The jets flying overhead were a nice touch. And a group was handing out free salads.

I would really prefer to watch sports - and I love sports - without it always being tied to the military, but particularly fighter jets. I like the National Anthem, and a color guard just fine, but these overt military symbols bug me. Judging by the reaction they get, even from my liberal family and friends, I'm pretty sure the tradition isn't going anywhere soon.

back to when the military was for good things like defending America from Nazis.

It's a damn shame that some politicians have used them for bad things.

they did this at the Twins home opener today as well.

And, just to really get myself in trouble, I hate it during the seventh inning stretch (usually only at Sunday games but they did it at the opener today) when they expect everyone to stand up while someone sings "God Bless America". I go to see a ballgame, not some kind of forced patriotic display.

I will never go to another game on Independence Day, the last time I did I thought it resembled May Day in Red Square with all the military crap. BTW, I understand the military pays MLB to allow these displays.

I'll even go so far as to bad mouth the National Anthem being played before every frickin' sporting event down to the middle school level. I know what country I'm in, thankyouverymuch.

Who's paying for those flyovers?
Is that why we have to cut so much out of the rest of the budget - for fricking flyovers?
