White people are still big fans of Donald Trumps job performance: poll

White people are still big fans of Donald Trump’s job performance: poll
According to a recent poll, Trump's approval rating is abysmal but he still hasn't lost support from his white base
Taylor Link Friday, Mar 31, 2017 5:50 PM EDT

More white Americans than not believe that President Donald Trump has delivered a solid job performance thus far. While Trump’s approval rating has sunk in various polls, The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that Trump is treading above water with white voters.

A majority of white Americans, 53 percent, approve the job Trump is doing, according to the poll. White Americans without a college degree are even more bullish on the president, with 58 percent approve of the work he has done.

We should all agree that no group of people walk in lock step. To identify that a certain group is racist because many (even most for a specific large demographic classification) is in it's self racist. I start wondering if this person is someone trying to cause division on our site (Russian troll--hurts to be insulted doesn't it). We get in enough fights over liberal and progressive. We don't need to make race a divider because a good chunk of our party are white and have been Democrats for generations and generations.

Christ on a crutch, but man are people thin-skinned and overly defensive on this one! For crying out loud, the original post doesn't say all white people - it mentions that over half (that would be most - even here in fuzzy math Texas) of whites polled approve of the job STFU Donny is doing. Now that should bother folks across the spectrum - the fact that so many white people see things differently, and I will say loudly -- wrongly. But, it's not about us white folks here on DU for the most part.

Except for one thing, many of us, many of my family, and I would say most for some of my progressive acquaintances cannot fathom how anybody could support this president to the point where they are so blind that they cannot understand that many fellow whites actually do. In fact, according to this poll, most whites are OK with this guy.

I have tried to describe the level of racism and hatred for all things Democratic in our country to many of my fellows, and they usually tell me I'm way off base or exaggerating without any facts. For some reason, people seem comfortable with confiding to me things not usually mentioned in public or mixed company. Mixed in this case means where democrats and republicans might be in the same room. I grew up in a very red-necked mining town and have the ability to fit or "slip" into white racist republican groups or liberal groups. I can tell you that the use of the pejorative nigger was uttered freely and far more frequently in certain conversations when Obama was running against McCain. After he won, such utterances went off the charts, just like guns and ammo went flying off the shelves of gun stores.

Too many (I don't know if it's most) liberal white people have no clear sense of how the "other half" is actually living! Interesting post and interesting reactions!

The large numbers of white people who DO support Trump - someone who is patently crazy - IS statistically significant and speaks to the prevalence of white racism. I don't care for the defensiveness around here. Besides, generalizing about white people is NOT as destructive as generalizing about more vulnerable groups such as blacks. I hate seeing this defensiveness on what is supposed to be a progressive board. The popularity of Trump DOES have something to do with whiteness. Looks like some people have some work to do when it comes to understanding racism in the USA.

Yeah, that's pretty obvious since you're posting here. Therein lies the problem. But also the solution. When comedians joke about "racist" being the "n-word for white people" it may in fact have a degree of merit. Perhaps this could be used to channel a marginal degree of empathy for poc fearing for their lives when they're not sure if a white person is a Trump supporter, and a danger, or not? Haha doesn't that sound ironic, it's like a reappropriation of the racial fear pervasive in the minds of white Americans except it doesn't have any institutional or socioeconomic ramifications so it really just makes those (white Americans) afflicted feel a lil' miffed.

53% of whites approve of Trump's performance. 47% do not. That isn't "BIG FANS" but a small plurality.

But as someone who works in stats it isn't an overwhelming majority. We really need to figure out what happened to the uneducated, low income whites. That is where the really big problems lives.

Among college educated whites, only 39 percent of men and 52 percent of women voted for Clinton.

Despite Trump's personality disorder, inexperience, business conflicts, hidden taxes, sexism, racism, and xenophobia, only 52% of college educated white women sided with Clinton-- a woman who also happened to be the most qualified person to ever run for president (a fact acknowledged by both president Obama and Bill Clinton).

They keep shooting up meth and heroin, living off fast food and beer, playing with their 20 loaded guns, and supporting the guy who keeps them dirt poor and without health care.

Thank God I left my rural hillbilly town, got a college degree and married a Puerto Rican woman I half-jokingly tell my wife that the main reason I married her was simply because all the other single women in my hometown were a little too closely related to me for comfort, and the family needed some fresh blood in the mix!

Blame Trump’s Victory on College-Educated Whites, Not the Working Class

excerpt:

The average Trump voter is not poorly educated or unemployed, nor does he live in a rural area. Back in May, FiveThirtyEight’s Nate Silver punctured the myth of the “working class” being Trump’s voter base: In exit polls of 23 states from the primaries, all showed a higher median income for Trump supporters than the national average, usually around $70,000. Exit polls last week, while not definitive, reveal that both college-educated white men and college educated white women voted for Trump by much higher than expected margins.

my husband would explode. I have more faith in Americans than you do, he'd say. The majority of Americans are not racist, he'd say. Well, he still maintains he was right, but his faith is definitely shaken. Most of his family, not all, is evangelical and racist.

Honestly, trump is a racist, and enough people voted for him to make him president. People voted their hate and the election was stolen. I'm not naive, been around 70 years. Lived in North Carolina, 1957-58 and saw Jim Crow in person, something I've never forgotten, but most Americans have. Americans forget and deny any and all things non exceptional.. Maybe that's why fake news does so well, we've have never been real good at accepting the truth.. and of course, I don't mean ALL Americans, but certainly enough to make a difference.

76. Trump is going to keep a lot of his voters until the next recession
Sat Apr 1, 2017, 06:12 AM
Apr 2017

Trump is going to keep most of his supporters until the next economic downturn. The US is still coasting on President Obama's recovery, the Reublicans' assaults on the US social safety net haven't impacted most of his base yet, and the Rethuglies yet to set off a recession on their watch.

As much as it saddens me to say this, the only way enough of Trumps's supporters are going to wise up is through prolonged health and financial pain. Unfortunately, a lot of the rest of us are going to have to suffer for their folly alongside them.

It indicates a level of stupidity I've never seen before in my long life. Trump is right when he says he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose support. His supporters - who are by and large white - have a cult mentality not seen since Jonestown.

that our side did not have enough turnout in the really critical states, including informed and aware Democrats/Independents like me. Too many good white people sat on their ass and allowed this.... thing.... to get elected.

Good news (if we assume the poll is accurate, which is a big assumption): 47% of whites disapprove and I strongly suspect that number will steadily go higher and higher. The non-deadenders will eventually peel off when they realize how bad he is.
