(9,696 posts)I'd say it's fair to ask that no one get "in your space" before a big performance.
Not allowing employees or underlings to have eye or other contact is just ass-holery.
Very common for performers to need space before a show
Not common for worthless scum parading as SOS

(905 posts)Las Vegas styled venue on Van Dyke. I was told that acts would fly through Detroit between Vegas and other hot spots.
Worked the Diana Ross shows. I worked right near the stage. Set up was cocktail tables, I guess like Vegas. Each performer had the usual green room, own bar, own area for crew, rider etc. The performer had the option of service during the show, which most ok'd, or no service during the show. She chose no service during her show. We actually loved that because we would show up, set up our areas, bring in the first audience, tell them no service during the show and they would load up on drinks and tip us out. We would then go upstairs and watch the show from the "lighting" room and party. I met Tom Jones' son up there and he was pretty cool. Anyways, we were setting up and she was doing a sound check. Most waitstaff joined up with a neighbor wait of the opposite sex. That way both of you cover two sections and the old ladies wanted to the cute college boy and the old men wanted the cute college girl. Nothing untoward, just good service and huge tips.
Back to the story, we were setting up and chatting with our neighbors as we went and she went into a rage and wanted everyone OUT! She wanted one girl fired and really had a fit. The management finally got her to go on, let us set up in silence and then agreed to not hold our last call for staff after the second show. She really is a diva!
Tom Jones, and most others, were so cool. They came out and chatted with us, asked us if we made better tips with service during show or not - not by the way and came to staff last call.
I was there the night David Ruffin was arrested. The police were lined up against the wall with us until the show finished. It was awesome.

(905 posts)Best group ever for tips: Righteous Brothers - I backed up the money truck!
Dirtiest show: Redd Foxx - absolutely filthy but I was like 19 years old soooo
Biggest disappointment: George Carlin - he was not too far off his brain surgery or cancer or something. The crowd was crushed.

(12,448 posts)while bowing, like people have to do with the Queen of England? I think it's stupid with the Queen, and even more so with someone like Tillerson. That's the kind of thing monarchs demand.

(132 posts)You weren't supposed to look Henry VIII in the eye, either. Also, you must kneel, and never turn your back. That last one was common sense, in addition to protocol.
Acceptable, I suppose, in a Tyrant King, but a bit much in a supposed democracy.

How I feel for those career diplomats. It must be so strange for them, especially after Obama/HRC/Kerry.
I just heard on Hardball tonight (per David Ignatius) that the theme of ALL foreign policy, in every agency, top to bottom, will now be "America First." (and, needless to say, environment and human rights and democracy last. )

(65,403 posts)On his first three foreign trips, Tillerson skipped visits with State Department employees and their families, embassy stops that were standard morale-boosters under other secretaries of state.
My son and his wife, both of who are career State people (son in Foreign Service) got to meet the Obamas when they stopped by their embassy during a foreign trip. I have pictures of both of them (especially Pres. Obama, who was obviously delighted, because he loves babies so much) greeting my 16-month-old granddaughter during that embassy stop.

(2,176 posts)This is one of my favorite old movies everyone should see. For those who haven't Chauncey is actually a gardener but his simplicity is taken as great wisdom by shallow "power people". It's a must see and perfectly played by Peter Sellers.

(11,101 posts)I worked for a summer at a medium sized corporate/ real estate law firm. Not as a clerk, just a glorified errand boy, as I had no interest in that type of law, but the pay was good and the hours flexible. It was a very hierarchical, structured environment. I hated the whole place, but one thing I remember was that when I started I was told to never speak to, or make eye contact with a partner. Such sad little people.
