Peduto(D Mayor of Pittsburgh Pa.) Budget proposal would shield youth jobs program against Trump plan
President Donald Trump’s budget proposals have imperiled the the local Learn and Earn program, which relies in part on Community Development Block Grant money, according to the Peduto administration. Mr. Trump’s budget plan for the 2018 fiscal year would eliminate federal CDBG funding.
Each year, about 2,000 Allegheny County youths — including many in Pittsburgh — land summer jobs through Learn and Earn, according to the city. To shield the offering, Mr. Peduto is introducing legislation Tuesday before City Council that would transfer $700,000 in the city’s 2017 operating budget “to ensure continuity” for Learn and Earn, his office said.
“Enough is enough. We won’t allow the president’s reckless decisions to hurt kids who depend upon these jobs,” Mr. Peduto said in a statement. “Learn and Earn is a pathway to careers for many of our youth, and we can’t let those opportunities go to waste.”
