so he'd starve to death as an undertaker. Undertakers need to act lugubrious and sympathetic.

Maureen Dowd stole the line from the Irish writer/journalist Dermot McEvoy. When she first used it 5 years ago, she gave him credit. Here's the original Dowd usage. (Sept 3, 2012)

"As the writer Dermot McEvoy noted, Ryan has “the so-sincere, so-phoney air of a gloomy Irish undertaker standing outside the funeral parlour where you’ve come to plant your mother, shaking his head consolingly and giving you that firm two-handed Irish handshake.”

She's a good enough writer on her own without having to take others' lines. Dermon McEvoy has the perfect description of Ryan, though. It's just great.
