The family of a northern Indiana restaurant owner who ICE detained during a routine check-in in February says hes scheduled for deportation Friday.
Roberto Beristain is the owner of a popular restaurant in Granger called Eddies Steak Shed. His family says he came to the United States from Mexico City illegally in 1998. He later obtained documentation to work in the country and checked in with ICE each year.
It was during one of those check ins last month that ICE took Beristain into custody because of an incident in 2000. Roberto and his wife, Helen, were visiting Niagara Falls that year and accidentally crossed into Canada. Officers there detained Roberto when they realized he was in the U.S. illegally. Helen says a lawyer helped get Roberto out on bail, but he was told he had to voluntarily leave the country within a month.

During an interview earlier this month, Helen said she voted for President Donald Trump because she supports his immigration policies. She said criminals should be deported, but she didnt think her husband would face that fate.

(7,300 posts)While a small part of me has sympathy there's more that doesn't. I love seeing Trump voters getting screwed by their own votes.

(7,300 posts)In a country with such a low turn out as ours, we don't need to flip anybody. We just need to increase the number voting. We're already in the voting majority just not enough so that we win the electoral college. But you all can go ahead and try to flip Shit Gibbon's supporters. I'm done with them and that includes family.

(1,058 posts)If you marry a citizen in the US while you are in the US illegally, whether or not you are green card eligible depends on whether or not you entered the country legally and overstayed (which is easy to get past) or if you entered the country illegally (coming across a border without permission). The latter is actually a crime, which can prevent you from being eligible for a green card. Furthermore, even if you entered legally, if you have caught overstaying your visa, that can be a significant barrier to a green card.
