(15,682 posts)In High School I used to buy a Heath Bar and a Pepsi (the real Pepsi) after school every day. There was something about the combination of the Heath and the Pepsi bubbles that made it outrageously good. The flavors exploded together. It didn't work with Coke or any other cola, for some reason. Just with Pepsi. So good!

(15,682 posts)She does not appear to a woman who would have the luxury of turning down Medicare. I can't imagine that she (or her husband) has a private health insurance policy covering all her health care needs. But that is just my opinion based on her appearance. That (judging a book by it's cover), I'll admit, is something I should not do. But I did.

(6,160 posts)Is she stupid enough to think Medicare is not a part of government?
I would venture to say: You betcha!

(3,596 posts)She has probably been on Medicare for at least 5 to 10 years and living on her Social Security. She probably gets really ticked off if her SS check is late (assuming she doesn't have direct deposit) and doesn't like that she has to pay for any of her medical care, including her Rx.
These are the people that are hard to understand. They just don't have any comprehension of what is going on around her. I doubt she has Alzheimer's but she exhibits signs of stupidity. There is no other word for it.

(12,233 posts)1. They got their's and don't want to share. They've been told they r going to have less benefits. They have been told there will be long waits and it will take long amts of time for surgery. They don't want to be those Canadians' or eupropeans' with long lines and/ or being denied care because the govt doesn't approve what the Dr orders.
2. Many of these delusional older folks are stuck on Faux Noise. Fox and Friends spends a good amount of time everyday lying, confusing, and manipulating people with their "entertainment news". It doesn't help that they have a lot of Republican politicians showing up all day long spewing the same non-sense. There is a general sense that politicians are not trustworthy and that during an election cycle, they are known to stretch the truth about their opponent's positions and background info.... But that's expected. When the politician is in office and representing the people, there is a general sense with these older people that they wouldn't out and out lie to them about a program or a law. So, when Senator Rubio shows up and tells you that Obamacare is going to cause ur medicare costs to increase and decide what treatments it will cover and that the Medicare program is having money taken out of it (essentially, there are cost saving measures that have been added to improve services like 1 test going to all the Drs on your list, rather than multiple blood/ testing at each specialist and things like computerizing one's medical records that hospitals around the country can access easily and know what mess/ allergies/ etc are on one's records).
3. Many older people are enrolled in a Medicare Part D; which is a private insurance company administering their care... So, these older folks aren't carrying around that says "govt healthcare Medicare card", they are carrying an Aetna card or BC/BS. Then there are others who have retirement benefit plans from their former companies OR they may have served in the military and have TriCare plans and/ or access to VA hospitals, etc.
Biggest problem, they are old, they are on the margins of society (how many times are they the target of a predator scam)? People, in general, have this weird-o "pull up your own bootstraps" mentality. When they aren't working and start drawing their entitlements that they paid intothe system, they are treated more as useless eaters. Plus, let's face it, as one grows older, the possibility of losing one's mental capabilities can become diminished. Medications can cause side affects that cause confusion. And they have a general sense that the chain e-mail their friend just sent them or the tv reporter on fox or the politician who just told them straight to their face that the govt was going to screw with their Medicare, cut funding on the program, institute "death panels" (i.e., deciding on who or what type of care they will be allowed to receive), and that they will have long lines to wait in and they might be stuck behind the "illegal Mexican" who "doesn't contribute" and that they have to pay for now.
If they had politicians on their side of the fence and on cable noise channels not spending entire days lying to them and working them into a frothy mixture of venomous bile, they might actually understand that the ACA would be beneficial for them and their loved one's like their precious grand-baby who has leukemia and parents who work at Walmart and were previously unable to afford health care insurance, will now have a chance of surviving cancer AND that grandbaby cannot be kept from buying health insurance in the futuredue to their childhood pre-existing condition AND there is no cap on the insurance, so all of the treatments will be covered, rather than taking up church collections and bake sales and second mortgages to pay for chemi treatments.
Personally, I think there should be a law against politicians lying. If one is running for OR representing constituents, they cannot get up on a podium, interview on a news channel, or even stretch the truth in a campaign ad, without being severly punished... Like minimum of 10yrs behind bars and a huge fine (their entire tax payer funded pay checks and benefits pd back to the people) if they have been found to purposely lie. Mitt Romney would have been locked away in his own doggy kennel by now for all his lies.
