General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forums3 extra credits for anyone that watched UP with Chris Hayes this morning.
The discussion covered the Supreme Court decision and the Eric Holder contempt charges. There were a couple of constitutional scholars plus Ezra Klein and others. It was very informative in the way they handled the tax vs commerce clause in the Court arguments. It was almost like the Democrats had to be reminded that they had the power to tax per the Constitution of the US. In their desire not to be called "big taxing liberals", they were always searching for ways to compromise with the tax-cutting conservatives. One of the guests, perhaps it was the Congresswoman from NY, suggested that the Congress stop running from their constitutional right to levy taxes when necessity dictated. And the healthcare issue was one of those types of necessities.
Also, Chris had on the author of the article in Fortune magazine, Katherine Eban, that had investigated and researched the facts in the "Fast and Furious" case in Arizona. She explained clearly and concisely what was happening and what had happened in the gun running cases in Phoenix. The drug dealers in Mexico, thru a middleman, would pay youngsters, like an 18-year old, to purchase large numbers of automatic weapons legally and transfer them to the narco-gun runners in Mexico. There were no laws against it and none of the law enforcement would take them on. The NRA, in their paranoia, (my words) were afraid the Obama Administration was going to crack down on the sales of automatic weapons and they preferred the shipment of weapons to the drug dealers over the possibility that there might be some federal oversight over the sale of these weapons.
It was an educational show and deserving of the extra credits, in my opinion.

(4,458 posts)Gonzales V Raiche decision based upon his opinion of the Commerce Clause? Did this ruling create a "Catch-22" that mandates individuals to grow cannabis?
I thought that part interesting.
Many times during the ACA debate in the SCOTUS, this decision was heavily referred to.

I'm asking because I'm no lawyer and I'm not sure what this means nor why this particular decision was seemingly a key consideration.
Thanks in advance.

(111,110 posts)But they did not go into it deeply enough to understand it thoroughly.
I'm happy to hear I am not the only one left questioning "clarity of intent"
The question now is Who can clarify and how many ways will those opinions differ from each other
It would be awesome if Cannabis Prohibition was accidently overturned via SCOTUS!

(55,981 posts)The only recourse citizens would have would be to take them to court and that would give the Court a chance to "fix" the mistake.

(1,540 posts)I live in Arizona and didn't realize how bad any form of gun control is here. I now understand how easy it was for a mentally disturbed young man to buy a gun and shoot Gabby Giffords, my Representative. NRA and Issa really needed to be exposed and Katherine Eban and Chris Hayes did an excellent job. Hopefully other true journalists will pick up the gauntlet.
This show is one that should be re-run.

(1,321 posts)Been watching "UP..." both Sat & Sun since it started; a great partner with Rachel Maddow for MSNBC. Along with Bill Moyers on PBS and
Bill Maher's "Real Time" on HBO (on summer hiatus until mid-August) these are IMHO the most intelligent discussion/news/opinion shows on the tube.
Very good summary...thanks!

(7,574 posts)What a sorry mess of lies have been spun for public consumption - a veritable spider's web of total distortion, cover up, misleading information. Issa should be tried for misuse of his office - kicked out - he is double scum - along with the NRA.

(111,110 posts)I would agree about Katherine Eban.
However, I wonder what Issa could be charged with? Malfeasance of office? He is the one that is covering up the information that is needed for people to make an informed decision. He is withholding information from his own investigation. It does seem criminal.

(6,335 posts)I like how that guy pulled out his Constitituiton and said the main article in the constitution is about the power of the govt to tax. The Articles of Confederation didnt have that so it made the Constitituion necessary if the US was to survive from the continuing threat from Britain.
That was a very important point that he made.

(47,602 posts)and this was as you wrote, one of the more educational ones.
I had to stop and rewind it several times as it was so packed with information, I couldn't absorb it all. Excellent choice of guests.
