Let's face it, Trump made a boatload of enemies during the campaign. As soon as he's wounded enough, someone's going to pounce, likely at Paul Ryan's behest. So, who's going to wield the proverbial knife and start the impeachment? It's only a matter of time before they all smell blood in the water. Someone's going to want to be seen as a non-partisan hero. Who will it be???

(6,401 posts)I'm betting this is his last term and has nothing to lose. He has been a vocal critic.
Granted he is in the Senate, but he will make the call and a bunch of R Reps will suddenly grow a pair, albeit, briefly.

(6,496 posts)Susan Collins tries to stay above the fray. She made statements in the past that show she doesn't like Trump. She needs to look like she doesn't support any of Trump's craziness because Trump is not popular overall in Maine. Yeah, he got a single electoral vote from Northern Maine, but she has to win over the whole state for re-election, which I think would be next year for her. Southern Maine is where the majority of the population lives and that area is strong for the Democrats. She may also decide to run for governor instead next year. Either way, Mainers will be looking at how she responds to this whole situation and she knows it. There are some nutty die hard Republicans in Northern Maine, but they are not the majority in the state.

Those few members will then be OK'd to appear moderate and be the faces of reasonableness, asking a hard question or two or being seen as critical of TPTB. But overall they will put party first and not jeopardize the vote result the leaders want.
