3. Paul Ryan complains that Obamacare involves younger, healthier people subsidizing older, sicker people.
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) gave a PowerPoint presentation on Thursday in which he said that Obamacare had a fatal flaw: That it counted on healthy people to pay for the care of sick people.
The fatal conceit of Obamacare is that were just going to make everybody buy our health insurance at the federal government level, he said. Young and healthy people are going to go into the market and pay for the older, sicker people. So the young, healthy person is going to be made to buy healthcare, and theyre going to pay for the person, you know, who gets breast cancer in her 40s or who gets heart disease in his 50s.
Of course, theres a very good reason to have younger, healthier people subsidize older, sicker people: One day those young people will be older and sicker as well. That is entire purpose of universal social insurance.

(37 posts)Sure, I see old people around. Counting change in the check-out line, holding up traffic, looking all pitiful with those stupid walkers. God, I wish they would just get a job.

(118,658 posts)sent into war willingly. Ryan is such a creep. I think he gets off on this stuff. He constantly tries to sell a **** sandwich to Americans. It is a compulsion almost. He probably made sure he would be the main policy spokesman for all ayn randian policy still if he accepted the republucan whip position.

(13,773 posts)Certainly none of those accidents that involve broken bones, concussions, or paralysis. Nothing that requires several complex surgeries and long hospital treatment and then a year or two of follow-up doctor visits.

(2,560 posts)She said "You haven't been here for a couple of years". I said "You said that last time I was here".
I was paying for "socialised" medicine in The Netherlands. It didn't worry me that I was paying into a system which wasn't actually benefiting me at that particular moment. I would have loved to continue paying into a system I wasn't using because I knew one day I might!
But I got older and needed some medical attention. And yeah, I have to pay some additional, but they are of the order of a couple of hundred Euros. And, of course, we complain about it. But we don't see bills getting into the thousands.

(6,496 posts)one day they will be old and supported by the people younger than them. If that stops happening, then we are all screwed when we get old. I suppose Republicans think the old should hurry up and die because if you aren't working for them and earning them money, then you've outlived your usefulness.

(1,606 posts)and frankly... a right.
In my mind, the lack of single payer is why this country isn't really a "first world" country. It's just more blatant now, and I'm glad that people are at least getting outraged. The petty scraps that ACA provided us are now in danger of being ripped away, and perhaps the threat of death and dying in the gutter/grannies getting dumped out of nursing homes will spur people to maybe... give a shit.
Ryan can go fuck himself.
