Why does the Ecuadorian embassy give Assange safe harbor?

I kind of missed this when it was happening several years ago. How did Asange end up there and why is he allowed to stay? I realize that he is being given safe harbor, but As far as I know Ecuadorean govt is left of center, Assange is far right. Keeping him there for years on end cannot be cheap, who is paying for him? How is this in Ecuadors interest?

Are there Russian ties that are so far unrevealed?

Or does Assange have information concerning a member of the Ecuadorean Government?

A good question to ask.

I always wondered this myself, but as all what is unfolding has unfolded, it is pretty much a given that Putin has a deal set up somehow.

The cost expended to keep him up has to be substantial. Who or what would want to live like that?

I think the Ecuadorian government wants Assange out but doesn't know how to do it. Some think when current President leaves office that the next President will make Assange leave.
