Lawmakers are trekking to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, to review classified evidence on Russias involvement in the presidential election. The House has scheduled its first public hearing on the issue. And the Senate is preparing to interview witnesses.
The congressional investigations into ties between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian officials are in full swing.
For months, the leaders of the House and Senate intelligence committees said their investigations into Russias meddling in the 2016 presidential election were in their initial stages. On Tuesday, it became clear that the probes had moved into a new phase.
The CIA is now providing raw intelligence documents to committee members, according to multiple senators. Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) visited CIA headquarters on Monday to view the documents underlying the intelligence communitys unclassified assessment that Russia sought to sway the election in favor of Trump.

(58,785 posts)of this classified data they're reviewing available to the public? If the CIA's means of collecting various data are blown, perhaps those reasons for keeping it secret will no longer be a barrier to revelation. In some cases.

(7,816 posts)conclusions they make to lawmakers and let the chips fall wherever, regardless of consequences?
Or...if you're high up in the IC and you come across information having explosive consequences, do you:
1) send it up the ladder and sideways so that any scandal sees the light of day, no matter how damaging to US reputation on the world stage? If there's chaos and constitutional crisis, that's the way it goes?
2) explore opportunities to keep things stable...such as helping cut deals to hide compromat...or allowing the WH to get out ahead of scandal...or limit access to the most sensitive info. Do you see stability and much more important than transparency and justice?
The CIA/FBI may know everything and it may be much more than the public knows...the question becomes: What to do about it?
