So...who's doing this?On Wednesday, which is International Womens Day, the organizers behind the historically successful Womens March will attempt to harness that energy towards a general strike, dubbed A Day Without a Woman. The goal, according to organizers, is to recognize the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic systemwhile receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity.
Despite our 45th presidents nearly all-white-male Cabinet, determination to cripple Planned Parenthood, eager willingness to separate and destroy families, reported disinclination to fund Violence Against Women Act grants, and his own acknowledged history with sexual assault, this is not explicitly an anti-Trump strikealthough it will undoubtedly be interpreted that way by many participants and observers, as it stands in opposition to everything he and Republicans in Congress represent.
Heres what you should know.
Whos involved?
A Day Without a Woman, whose organizers include Womens March co-chairs Tamika Mallory, Carmen Perez and Linda Sarsour, is taking place in solidarity with the International Womens Strike, which has partners in over 50 countries.
A Day Without a Woman has been endorsed by several organizations and businesses, including Amnesty International, Alliance for Justice, Sonos, and Moms Demand Action. Its not clear yet whether any of the members of Congress who showed up to the Womens March will be involved in the strike.

(11,686 posts)of a "Little House On The Prairie" where the women where trying to get the men to sign a bill for women to be allowed to own things such as property. All of the women left the men to work and take care of the children also. It worked. Yeah, again, corny but it drove a point.

(6,551 posts)Haven't seen much publicity and many women can't afford to miss work.
"According to organizers, women can participate in any or all of the following ways: by refraining from paid and unpaid work, by not shopping in stores or online (with the exception of local small businesses and women-owned businesses), and/or by wearing red, which signifies revolutionary love and sacrifice.

(6,496 posts)where I show up to work and there are co-workers. I have co-workers, but I mostly talk to them on the phone or e-mail them and we are all remote. It's kind of hard to organize anything noticeable. Plus, not very many women work for my company. I think it would be barely noticed (more likely not noticed at all). I do need to work tomorrow or otherwise I'm working on the weekend (no thanks). I have flex time so I work when I want to, but my schedule is tight because of my kids' schedules. No, I'm not participating in the strike. I'd love to if it seemed like it would be effective. I hope some other women are able to do this.

Ironically I'm kind of the anti-striker as I'll have a few pussyhats with me that I would like to sell.

(284 posts)I don't have anywhere to go tomorrow, but I might step outside for a bit and walk around just to see if a lot of women are wearing red. It won't happen in my overwhelmingly red (ironically) town, so I might have to take a stroll somewhere in the next town over.
My ultimate dream is for the reduced spending to have enough of a noticeable impact that people begin seriously thinking about a general strike. We can end this presidency tomorrow if we truly come together, but it would require immense organization and interest.

(9,257 posts)Not shopping is probably the easiest. Maybe that and tossing on something red.
No guilt. No worries.
Solidarity!
