AARP is ticked off about Trumpcare.

New York Times:

WASHINGTON — Republican plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act have encountered a new obstacle: adamant opposition from many older Americans whose health insurance premiums would increase.

AARP and its allies are bombarding congressional offices with objections as two House committees plan to vote on the Republicans’ bill this week.

If the law is repealed, the groups say, people in their 50s and 60s could see premiums rise by $2,000 to $3,000 a year or more: increases of 20 percent to 25 percent or higher.

Under current rules, insurers cannot charge older adults more than three times what they charge young adults for the same coverage. House Republican leaders would allow a ratio of five to one — or more, if states choose.

If he ever looks like he's going to violate those commitments, the AARP members will be all over him like bark on a tree. And if he actually violates those commitments, he'll lose millions of votes.

the ads actually show Trump saying he would keep Medicare and SS. I think the ad is to convince congresscritters to hold the line on any changes to the programs.

YMMV, of course.

The AARP is NOT your enemy any more that the Republicons would have you believe the government is your enemy.

The AARP ad is a tantamount to a line in the sand, using Trump's own words (promise) as a shield against what it anticipated would be extreme overreach by Congressional Refucks. While reminding us all, the ad speaks directly to ACA beneficiaries who voted for Trump and are about to get shafted.

Whether they're smart enough to realize they bought a pig in the poke is another questions. But the AARP ad is trying to lead those horses to water.

Calm down. You don't need your money back. Sheeeesh...

one of the problems with the ACA was that younger people were paying more than older people relative to health care usage. I think that was a mistake, assuring a lot of younger people would oppose ACA (but I get it might have been necessary to get something enacted). Since the GOP prefers continuing this charade of using private insurers, Congress should consider ensuring adequate subsidies. But, they won't if they continue with this flat rate subsidy that everyone gets that will likely be eaten up in the first year of premium increases.

I am very familiar with the ACA as it saved my life, both health-wise and financially. I still have my home.

Young people can buy catastrophic insurance and that's allegedly cheaper than what we older folks buy. When I was on ACA, I had a subsidy but my share was still $550/mo. b/c I bought the best plan I could. I just had a cancer diagnosis the previous month, my private insurer cut me off due to my pre-existing cond., I needed a major operation, and ACA saved me.

The main prob with ACA is the high cost of med care. I was charged $500/doc visit when the doc saw me 5 or 10 mins. I had a $40K charge for ONE round of chemo (decades-old, conventional, nothing new) and found an NIH site that said this chemo's real cost + admin. = $3600. I needed 12 rounds of chemo. An MRI costs $1500-$2000 each (one takes about 1/2 hr.). The prices are out of sight and we're not allowed to import drugs from other countries, thanks to Big US Pharma, the R Congress' puppetmaster.

Wed Mar 8, 2017, 01:36 AM

That loads premiums disproportionately on the young which I do not think is really fair. My solution would be for government to subsidize the disproportionate part. Until we get GOP to enact that or elect Democrats, it's still not fair to load up young people with that, and I'm an old guy.

That discrepancy exists whether chemo is $40K or $899. But, I fully understand what you are saying. Glad you are a survivor.

AARP and its allies should have "bombarded congressional offices with objections" well before November.

There are NO surprises here, NOTHING new. Ryan's agenda has been clear through the Primaries and the General Election.

And NOW AARP is "ticked off."

That's just super.
