The Russians by Hedrick Smith

I remember reading it. Lying by the authorities was so prevalent that the people became so cynical that they began to believe the opposite of everything that was told them them. The biggest trope by the authorities was that America was a horrible place to live. However because of the cynicism of the Russian people they believed America was some kind of utopia. They were told that the skyscrapers were on fire and the Russian would be like "oh, what a smell."

Reminds you of whom.

Previous monarchy also brutal at times. I want to read a book all about Rasputin - think there is one out, will check today.

Soviets could "disappear" people with swift dispatch. Whole studies by other countries about who was literally "no longer in the picture", via photo tampering, way before photoshop.

They are experts at this. If they decide to "disappear" Trump after his past due date of usefulness, he will be gone, one way or another. He is just smart enough to know this.
