Is anyone else having problems using their SNAP/food assistance benefits?
My disabled stepmom gets a modest amount of food assistance--not a lot, but without it she is unable to get by.
She lives in Illinois and usually gets her benefits on the LINK card on the third of the month. March 3, 4, and 5 go by, and no benefit dispersal. This morning, she called the 800 number on the back of the card. The office told her that her benefits were cancelled because she moved to a nursing home in January. That is FALSE! She still lives at home. What's more, she was told she would have to reapply for benefits and must apply in person at the local office rather than use the online application. She cannot drive, and lives in a place with limited public transportation and cannot afford a taxi, so that is a significant burden on her. I will have to take time off work to take her, and no promises she will be re-approved for benefits or will get the same amount.
We contacted our state rep (Brad Schneider) and they are emailling her the release form she must sign before they can look at her records.
Meanwhile, according to the website Down Detector http://downdetector.com/status/snap-ebt, many other people around the country are having similar problems as my stepmom.
Any one know what's going on here? Has the system been hacked?

(146,321 posts)reclassified in some way. That happens sometimes, often when a facility wants to take advantage of some benefits of being classed as a nursing home. That will be an important thing to find out.
An assisted living my late M-I-L lived in did that. It didn't impact her, but it might some others.

(1,353 posts)I'm not sure that applies in her case. She rents an apartment from a realtor. In fact, we live in the same building.
I will tell her to double check, just in case. Thank you!
