Folks are being held up at the Canadian border, told they need immigrant visa.

A Canadian woman travelling on a Canadian passport says she was turned away at the U.S. border and told she needed a valid immigrant visa to enter the country.

Manpreet Kooner, 30, is a Canadian citizen who was born to Indian parents in Canada and raised here. She now lives in Montreal's LaSalle borough.

She told CBC she was on her way from Montreal to a spa in Vermont for a day trip with two friends, who are both white, Sunday afternoon. They never made it.

for tourism in the United States. Some border official is overstepping his or her authority there.

That kind of racial or national ancestry nonsense is not supposed to happen and is not legal at all. Officious border officers, however, often do things that aren't according to the law.

And that woman was born in Canada and holds a Canadian passport. There was no legal reason for her to be denied entry as a tourist. The border agent overstepped his authority based on his own idiotic prejudices.

However, pressure will be brought by businesses who depend on Canadian tourism very shortly. Since it is patently stupid to keep Canadian citizens out who are planning to come here and spend money, this should get straightened out pretty soon. The Canadian government will also object to such denials of entry for their passport holders and citizens.

What happened is not part of any instructions to Canadian border people. It was a chump move by some bigoted border officer.

There aren't any instructions to border agents that would apply to a Canadian born Canadian passport holder being denied entry based on her Indian heritage. The Canadian government will address this, I'm sure, and such denials will end.

It's just stupid and hurts US tourist interests and US/Canadian relations. That border agent will be receiving some additional training shortly, I'm sure. He acted outside of any official instructions. He's just a bigot. They're out there.
