It sounds good but I'd like to hear your experiences.

(42,358 posts)I think they are a very worthwhile org. Wish they still ran the debates.

(145,433 posts)There are a good organization but have to be non-partisan. That is fine for voter registration but not for voter protection
When I volunteer for voter protection efforts, I do so through the the party. Some of the big firms and groups do non-partisan voter protection which is not that effective in that you cannot appoint poll watchers who can be in the polling place and are limited to people who observer from 100 feet outside the polling place.

(46,150 posts)Nobody wants to know how you're registered or who you support. The aim to get women and others registered to vote and then get them to vote.

(328 posts)... but I find them too neutral, too non-partisan for my taste. They do good on voter registration and on providing voter information. I've become a rather inactive member as I'm impatient with such civility for both sides of any issue.

(10,029 posts)It was held in a private residence and was standing room only. A good cross section of women showed up, many just trying to figure the best way to become politically active. They stressed that as a group the LWV was nonpartisan, but the individual issue committee groups appeared to lean left to me. They seemed to get around that by maintaining no endorsement of candidates. There were yearly dues involved, most of which went to their headquarters. I did not become a member yet.

(13,390 posts)In my city they drove an effort for a ballot measure to decriminalize marijuana. The put a lot of effort into educating the public on it. They also hold candidate forums that are nonpartisan so that both sides are included. The republicans skip sometimes, but they very often show up and expose themselves. The league has a lot od credibility, so what they say gets reported.

(129,256 posts)and at one time, they were one of the few aggregators of data on candidates and would publish election/voter guides as inserts in the local papers here. Now with the internet/web, there are so many other resources out there doing the same... But agree with other posters in that they often sponsored and hosted local candidate debates.
