Have you ever heard what sounds like a monkey call in the woods? Well, unless you happen to be birding near a zoo, you're probably hearing one of the many different calls of the Barred Owl.
The Barred Owl has long been heard in Eastern forests, but the bird is a relative newcomer to the Western U.S. thanks to an expanding breeding range. As Barred Owls become increasingly common across the country, you are more likely to hear their varied calls. Listen here to learn the many hoots of this large and vocal owl.
This audio story is brought to you by BirdNote, a partner of The National Audubon Society. BirdNote episodes air daily on public radio stations nationwide.

This is BirdNote!
The emphatic hoots of a pair of Barred Owls resonate in the still of a February night. So-called for the stripes on their breast, Barred Owls are among the largest owls in North America. They're also the most vocal. Their signature hooting sequence has been memorably described as who-cooks-for-you?! who-cooks-for-you-all?!
