Kansas new congress critter is a HUGE GOP SOB

“Just like Jesus said, ‘The poor will always be with us,’” he said. “There is a group of people that just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves.”

Pressed on that point, Marshall shrugged.

“Just, like, homeless people. … I think just morally, spiritually, socially, [some people] just don’t want health care,” he said. “The Medicaid population, which is [on] a free credit card, as a group, do probably the least preventive medicine and taking care of themselves and eating healthy and exercising. And I’m not judging, I’m just saying socially that’s where they are. So there’s a group of people that even with unlimited access to health care are only going to use the emergency room when their arm is chopped off or when their pneumonia is so bad they get brought [into] the ER.”

Poor people do not want health. Poor people have been out in droves fighting for health care. Poor people don''t want to eat healthy. Umm, no, poor people can't afford to eat healthy. Poor people do not do preventive measures. Uhmm, yes they do but a lot of time preventive is also expensive and they can not afford it. If poor people can afford to go to the doctor to take care of a problem before it gets to bad then they would. Let me guess this vile asshole is not going to use the emergency room when his arm is cut off. "His" hateful Jesus is going to fix it for him for free.

more than thirty years ago with an acquaintance who, because he knew exactly one person who chose not to have a job and to live on the streets, believed quite sincerely that all homeless were that way by choice.

In recent years I've done volunteer work helping to feed the homeless in my city. I know almost nothing of the individual stories, but it is so obvious that mental illness is at the root of a lot of homelessness. And another huge factor is sheer bad luck. The shelter I volunteer with gives jobs at the shelter to some of their residents. By listening I've learned some of their stories, and it's quite discouraging how a few bad choices can lead to homelessness. And that's among people who aren't mentally ill, who don't have enormous health problems, just took a couple of bad turns and here they are.

A personal story: We were quite poor when I was growing up. The specifics aren't important, but we regularly went hungry. We were never homeless, and it never seemed as if we were close to it, but looking back, and knowing what I know now, we probably were no more than a couple of paychecks away from having no where to live. Fortunately my mother (she'd left my alcoholic, abusive father and moved us five kids some two thousand miles across country to start a new life when I was 14) was a nurse, and she knew she could get work anywhere. Back then, more than 50 years ago, nurses weren't paid very well, and she often worked double shifts because we needed the money. Because of her profession we always had the bare basics. Rarely more, but we survived. Which is a lot more than some have.

And if your arm is chopped off or you get pneumonia, then you goddam well better be able to access the ER.

Don't eat right? Healthy is expensive, processed is cheap. Let's be honest for $5 you can buy a couple cases of ramen and several boxes of mac 'n' cheese or a couple frozen family sized entrees. Horrible nutritionally speaking but it takes away the hunger pains for a few days. Also when you're coming home after your second job and the kids are starving it's a whole lot quicker to pop a plate full of pizza rolls in the microwave than try to cook up some of the shit in these healthy living cookbooks.

Don't get preventative care? Even with Medicaid you still have to take off time from work and when you boss says no, you have to choose between being sick and losing your job. Also finding a doctor that takes adult medicaid is a real pain in the ass, take it from someone who has had to do it. Once you find one who takes it they only seem to do what is minimally necessary to treat you. I remember getting one side of my mouth taken care of at the dentist and then waiting until the new fiscal year started to get the other half done. One more thing: getting medication for chronic pain on Medicaid can be an epic battle.

Homeless? When I lived in Missouri there was a woman living on the streets who told me she did it by choice because she couldn't stand being enclosed in a room. That doesn't mean that all or even most homeless people are there by choice. From what I saw volunteering at a shelter, opening up access to mental health treatment would go a long way toward dealing with the homelessness problem in America.

we were very poor growing up.

You could tell what day of the week it was by what we had to eat that night.

Later, I figured out that my mom had her shopping list down to a specific amount and knew exactly the cost and never changed. On Sundays, we only had a roast and potatoes and carrots and creamed corn. One meal and we ate after church and then would have leftovers after the pm service.

On Fridays we each got one taco or taco burger.

Milk was for cereal only and if we wanted anything to drink it was water or sun tea

Tuna salad was a staple as was grilled cheese and tomato soup. My parents had a rule: the children ALWAYS ate first even if the adults didn't get to.
